Weekly Message ...
From Our W.D. Ministers
Rev. Douglas Loyd, Pastor
United Methodist Church
Note: This article is the sec-
ond in a series dealing with the
meaning of Lent, the season of
preparation for Easter, in which
we remind ourselves of the dark-
ness of the final days of Jesus'
ministry, so that we might cele-
'brate his resurrection more de-
eply and authentically.
When we think of the minis-
try of Jesus, most of us remem-
ber primarily the good days,
the early portion of his work
when the crowds flocked to see
him. People were eager to have
their lives made whole by hear-
ing his message, and they were
excited by the prospect that per-
haps the Messiah had finally
come. Jesus gained new follow-
ers every day, many of whom
expected him to fulfill all that
they expected of the Messiah
--in part, at least, that he
would rule forever over a new
Israel.
But this early "honeymoon"
phase of his ministry could not
last forever. For one thing, Jes-
us tended to offend a lot of peo-
ple because he was not afraid
to speak the truth exactly as
he saw it, and that meant step-
ping on a lot of very sensitive
toes. Partly for this reason, and
partly because his very popul-
arity was a direct threat to the
authority of the religious and
political leaders of his day,
Jesus soon became aware that ,
the course he had taken would
cost him his life. As he noticed
the leaders of thepolitical and
religious life of the nation con-
spiring against him, forever
trying to trap him into saying
or doing something for which
he could be brought to trial,
Jesus knew he would have todie.
When he shared this fact with
his followers, many began to
turn away. It became apparent
that he was not the kind of hero
they expected, and their hopes
of sharing in his kingdom were
dashed by his talk of his im-
minent death. Therefore many
began to forsake him, and he
found comfort by withdrawing
into the circle of his closest
disciples for his final weeks,
to prepare them for his death.
These close disciples, who
had been with him from the
first, could not believe that

he would really be killed. That
would mean defeat, the death
of their dream, the failure of
God's plan for the salvation of
mankind. But as Jesus "set his
face steadfastly toward Jerus-
alem". they too became con-
vinced that he really meant
to die. What a blow that was
to their faith! Some began to
harbor secret doubts about him,
and one even began conspiring
with the opposition to betray
him.
When the soldiers came to
arrest him in the garden of
Gethsemane, his closest fol-
lowers forsook him, and fled
to save their own skins. Even
Peter, whom Jesus had nick-
named "the rock", denied him
three times.
It was an inexorable down-
hill slide, then, which finally
led Jesus to his death on the
cross. As he hung there in in-
tense agony, wracked by pain
and forsaken by all his friends,
he gave in to the despair and
hopelessness of his situation.
Feeling that even God had
turned his back on him and
failed to live up to his pro-
mises, Jesus cried out, "My
God, my God! Why have you
forsaken me?"
Much as it hurts to do so,
let's leave him there on the
cross in his agony, forsaken
by God and man, dying a
slow and excruciating death.
Let's fix that image firmly in
our finds, because only by sens-
ing deeply the reality of the
cross--the defeat and humil-
iation which it represents---
can we hope to appreciate
fully and celebrate authentic-
ally the message of resurrection,
of Easter.

of the Conquering Hero--Psalm
Sunday ".
