The U S Comers for Dis-

(CDC) each year predicts which
strains of influenza pose the
greatest pubic health danger
The vaccine DCD has recom-
mended for the 1995-96 season
is designed to combat the
A/Johanne6burg. B/Beijing and
A/Texas (first isolated in Hous-
ton in 1991) strains of the dis-
Ftu vaccines change yearly
to combat mutations in the vi-
rus, and the effectiveness of
each year’s shots declines with
time. Therefore, annual immu-
nizations with the appropriate
vaccines are necessary for
people most at risk.
People most at risk of severe
or fatal complications of the dis-
ease include those 65 or older,
anyone with chronic respiratory
or heart problems and children
"Usuafly most threatening
between December through
April each year, influenza kills
about 20 thousand in the US.,
most of them in high-risk cate
gories." according to Robert D.
Crider Jr., director of TDH's
Immunization Initiative Division.
Crider said that the elderly are
among the hardest-hit by influ-
enza and its complications.
“Fewer then 30 percent of
Americans in high-risk groups
heed our repeated warnings to
seek influenza vaccinations." he
added. “We know that one rea-
son some older people fail to be
vaccinated is because of an
unfounded fear that the vaccine
can actually cause influenza
The truth is that a vaccinated
person may still contract some
strain of influenza but not from
the vaccine. If they do become
ill. the vaccine usually helps
lessen the severity of the case."

“We strongly recommend in-

pecially H they are international

infected with the human immu-

Benefits of
public
transportation
touted in TV
campaign
Austin-The benefits of pub-
lic transportation, including re-
duced traffic congestion and air
pollution, are highlighted in a
new public information cam-
paign titled "Don’t Be an
5.0. V.!" (Single-Occupant Ve-
hicle).
The campaign includes a 30-
second television public service
announcement produced by the
Texas Department of Transpor-
tation (TxDOT) and the Texas
Transit Association.
“With the ’Don’t be an
5.0. V.! campaign, we are ask-
ing all Texans to consider an
alternative to driving alone, one
that fits their needs,” said Rich-
ard Christie, director of
TxDOT’s Public Transportation

younger than 9 who have never
received flu vaccine need their

by a booster. Adults, however,

Crider explained that all
unimmunized residents of
chronic-care facilities, such as
nursing homes, should be im-
munized during October and
November since immunity may
not reach full strength for a few
weeks following vaccination.

Division. “Take the bus, form a
car pool or van pool, or take
some exercise by walking or
riding a bike.”
Christi said public transpor-
tation is not just for those in
large urban areas, pointing out
that Texas' rural public transpor-
tation system transports more
than four million passengers
annually and is one of the larg-
est rural systems in the nation.
“Public transportation is not
for everyone or for every trip,
but it does provide a transporta-
tion option that many people
find economical and enjoyable,"
Christi said.
Salvation
Army issues
plea for
dressmakers
The Salvation Army has is-
sued a desperate plea to the
Orange County citizens asking
for help in dressing dolls and
bears to be given away to
needy children.
According to Willeola Lewis,
chairperson for the Salvation
Army, boxes of dolls and bears
are available to be dressed. The
organization is asking for volun-
teers who either sew or are
willing to buy dresses to pick up
several dolls or bears and make
a child happy this year.
The dolls must be picked up
and returned by November 30.
