AT HARDIN-SIMMONS
he School of Music at Hardin-Simmons University has earned and maintained
a reputation as one of the premier schools within the Southwest. Simmons
College opened in 1892, only a decade after the City of Abilene was incorpo-
rated. The school's founders insisted that education with Christian direction must
include the arts. Within these pages you'll find just a few highlights from among the
many people, buildings, organizations, and even artifacts that have played a part in
the past 110 years.
This historic violin, now on dis-
play in the HSU Presidents Office, is
among many copied from the work
of Antonio Stradivari from 1735. His
technique in instrument design has
served as a conceptual model for violininakers for the last 250 years. Instru-
ments were often patterned after his designs and labeled with his name as a
tribute to his great work. This violin was generously donated to the School of
Music in 1996 by Bob Hitt, former chairman of the Board of Trustees and
class of 1949 graduate. First purchased by his father's great uncle for two
mules and a wagon during the Civil War, this violin became a treasure passed
through the Hitt generations. Hardin-Simmons is grateful to be the newest
home for this family heirloom. May it be a treasure to the HSU family as we
celebrate more than a century of excellence in music education.
