Lynn Bethel-Baldwin '74
Lynn Bethel-Baldwin graduated
from Baylor (as Lynn Reedy) with a
B.Mus. in piano performance in 1957,
then studied with Dr. Thurman
Morrison at HSU and received an
M.Mus. in piano performance in 1974.
"As a college piano major, there is
such a long wait between your fresh-
man and senior year. It's easy to get
'burned out' if you only practice to per-
form your juries and only play for your
professors." With this in mind, Lynn
established a piano concerto competi-
tion in 2000.
The annual Lynn Bethel-Baldwin
Piano Concerto Competition encour-
ages the study and performance of pi-
ano concerto literature. Winners re-
ceive cash prizes. Learning a piano
concerto is quite different than playing
solo repertoire, and often students
don't have opportunities to perform a
concerto with an orchestra.
While now "down" to 35 students,
Lynn remains a private piano teacher in
Snyder. Last spring, Lynn's students
included seven "first place" All-State
and 18 "outstanding" musicians in the
Texas Federated Music Club Allstate
Finals held at TCU. Many of her
former students have become success-
ful professional musicians, scholars,
and teachers. Lynn continues to en-
courage piano students to attend HSU,
"a smaller music school, with top qual-
ity teaching, where you are able to re-
ceive lots of support and attention."

writes "My musical expe-
riences since graduation
are varied and exciting!
After tutelage from Dr.
Euell Porter, Nena Will-
iams, Delbert Bowles, Dr.
Jack Dean, and Dr.
Thurman Morrison, I
went to Huntsville, Texas.
I was minister of music at
First Baptist Church
while teaching choral mu-
sic at Huntsville High Charle
Charli
School and Sam Houston
State University. During a short
army stint, I served as choral di-
rector at the Post Chapel in San
Antonio's Fort Sam Houston. Fol-
lowing discharge, I became minis-
ter of music in Houston's largest
Baptist church, Second Baptist.
While in Houston, I sang princi-
pal roles in Manon, Carmen, and
Der Rosenkavalier with the Hous-
ton Grand Opera Association, and
was soloist with the HoustonDowney (left) and Glenn Collier,
fellow minister, entertaining high
school students with their Homer
and Jethro act.s Downey '51, his wife, Joan; and children,

Symphony Orchestra in its debut
of the Houston Contemporary
Music Society, under the baton of
Leopold Stokowski.
"After Houston, I had the
privilege of serving as minister of
music at the largest Baptist church
in Missouri, First Baptist of
Springfield. I next went to Nash-
ville as a consultant in the church
music department of the Sunday
School Board of the Southern
Baptist Convention, and co-
authored Church Music Adminis-
tration with Dr. W Hines Sims,
BA '28/HMD '48.
"Through the years I have
been honored to have been bari-
tone soloist for oratorios includ-
ing Messiah, Saint-Saens' Christ-
mas Oratorio, Sacred Service, and
Elijah, and guest conductor and
choral clinician in several states. I
was also selected to sing with the
Centurymen, the national choral
group of Baptist Ministers of Mu-
sic. On several occasions, I was
honored to lead the music for na-
tional conferences at Glorieta and
Ridgecrest.
"Everything I ever accom-
plished musically was due largely
to the great foundation I received
at HSU. I am forever indebted!"
