U1HIAGO "TY" CARVALHO currently serves as HSU
student body president, although he did not learn
English until 1994. Ty, born and raised in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, went to school in Houston after his
father, serving in Brazil's navy, was to be stationed
in Washington, D.C. Ty's parents were advised to
place him in an American school the year before
moving in order for him to learn English. Although
his father's orders fell through and his family never
moved, Ty and his parents agreed he shouldcontinue his education in the U.S.
Ty had been accepted to Texas A&M, but his
American host family felt he could better
succeed at a smaller university. They suggested
HSU because they had an uncle who had
previously attended. Ty agreed to apply and
visited with his parents. He remembers that
while walking from the Sid Richardson Science
Building to Sandefer Memorial, he was stopped
twice and asked if he was a prospective student,Cover photo: Dr. Rob Sellers poses with HSU students (from left), Thiago "Ty" Carvalho, Masika Zawadi Bushu
