annual Science Fair, held at the
Catholic Parish Gym, Sunday,
March 10. Doors to the all-day
exhibit opened at 9:00 a.m. and

Dr. Coward is presently serv-
ing as vice-president of the
Southwest Division of the Texas
Dental Association.

Coward; and Dr. and Mrs. C. B.
Lynn. Dr. Lynn, father of Mrs.
Richard Knight of Gonzales, is
past president of the Texas
Dental Association.
Mrs. Coward is the president-
elect of the Texas Dental Aux-
iliary.
Some thirty-five persons, in-
cluding wives, attended the
professional meeting and filet
mignon affair.
The next meeting of the Gua-
dalupe Valley District Dental
Society will be held at Luling
in May. The new officers of the
organization will be installed at
the Luling meeting.
The organization includes
fourteen Texas counties cover-
ing an area extending from
Port Lavaca to Lockhart and
report to the effect that he had
fully decided to accept the call
from Lutheran Welfare Society
of Texas (an agency of the
Lutheran Church in Texas and
Louisiana) to serve as super-
intendent of the new Trinity
Lutheran Home for the Aged at
Shiner.
In presenting his official re-
signation as pastor of the con-
gregation, Rev. Oehlke stated
that he hadj after prayerful
consideration, sincerely felt it
to be divinely ordained that he
accept the call extended and
the opportunity thus afforded
to render a needful and useful
service in this social missions
phase of the Church’s ministry.
The resignation, as submitted,
is to become effective April
15, 1963.
In preparation for his ordina-
tion to the gospel ministry,
Pastor Oehlke had received his
academic training at Texas
Lutheran College, Seguin, at
Midland Lutheran College, Fre-
mont, Nebraska, and at the Chi-
cago Lutheran Seminary, May-
wood, Illinois. Prior to his or-
dination on September 5, 1945,
Rev. Oehlke had received a call
from the Shiner congregation
and began his ministry as pas-
tor of United Dr. Martin Luther
Church on October 1, 1945.
After the Pastor’s resignation
becomes effective, the Church
Council, in consultation with
the President of Synod, will
carefully consider prospective
candidates for the local pas-
torate, nominating one of these
at a time, followed by a meet-
ing of the congregation called
for the purpose of voting on the
nominee-pastor whose name

months and five days, passed
away at the Frank Wagner Me-
merial Hospital Saturday,
March 9, 1963 at 9:30 a.m.,
where she had been a patient
for one day.
Funeral services were held
from the Buffington Funeral
Home, Shiner, Monday, March
11 at 7:30 a.m. and continued
with Requiem Mass at 7:45 a.m.
at the Shiner Catholic Church.
Rev. Father Alphonse Padalecki
officiated at the last rites and
burial in the Shiner Catholic
Cemetery.
Rosary was recited at the
Buffington Chapel Sunday,
March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers were
Adolph Schaefer, Edwin and
Laddie Stluka, C. J. Sofka, Al-
bert Vaclavik and Hugo Poh-
ler Jr.
One of twelve children, Mrs.
Macha, nee Schaefer, was born
October 4, 1897 at Shiner,
daughter of William and Caro-
line (Hutchiem) Schaefer, na-
tives of Austria and Czechoslo-
vakia respectively.
She was married to Albert
A. Macha in Shiner. For the
past ten years she resided in
Shiner. Prior to that she lived
for a time in Corpus Christi.
Her husband died in a rest
home at Somerset December
15, 1962.
She is survived by two sons,
Albert Macha of Freeport, Har-
old Macha of Corpus Christi;
one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle M.
Prewitt of San Antonio; two
brothers, Anton and Louis
Schaefer of Shiner; five sisters,
Miss Mary Schaefer, Mrs. Au-
gust (Helena) Jalufka* both of
Shiner, Mrs. Pauline Bednar of
Philadelphia, Pa., Miss Frances
Schaefer, Mrs. Gus (Ida) Ayres,
both of San Antonio, also two
grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was
preceded in death by her par-
ents, the father having died No-
vember 16, 1922 and the mo-
ther, September 9, 1934; three
brothers, August, who died in
1910; William and Joe Schae-
fer and one sister, Mrs. Hugo
(Agnes) Pohler, who died Au-
gust 24, 1926.

ership, was presented Ford
Motor Company’s Sales Award
at a banquet at La Villita As-
sembly Building in San Antonio
on March 9, honoring high-
ranking Ford dealership car
and truck salesmen of 1962 in
the Houston District.
R. P. Harman, district sales
manager, said that Sales
Awards are presented for excel-
lent retail sales performance.
The Sales Award is special re-
cognition within the Ford 300-
500 Club which was founded in
1950 to recognize the perform-
ance of outstanding Ford sales-
men throughout the country.
Mr. Harman added that the
average 300-500 Club member
sold nearly $400,000 worth of
automotive merchandise in qua-
lifying for the national honors.

17-Year Pastorate To Accept Local
Home For The Aged Supt. Post
Laddie Patek well known
member of the famed Patek Or-
chestra of Shiner, died Satur-
day, March 9, 1963 at 1:50 a.m.
in the McLaughlin Hospital in
Eagle Lake, at the age of 60
years, 11 months and 17 days.
Mr. Patek was a trumpet
player and was returning home
with the orchestra from
Houston engagement Thursday
night. While enroute home he
became seriously ill and the
group stopped in Eagle Lake to
place him in the hospital where
he remained until his death.
Mr. Patek had been under a
doctor’s care for some time, but
had continued with his work
he loved so much, playing with
this famous orchestra which
was organized years ago by his
late father.
Funeral services were held
from the Buffington Funeral
Home, Shiner, Monday, March
11 at 10:15 a.m. and continued
at SS. Cyril and Methodius’
Catholic Church with Requiem
High Mass at 10:30 a.m. His
pastor, the Rev. Father G. Ku-
ratko of Sweet Home, was
celebrant of the Mass and also
paid deserving tribute to the
deceased in both the Czech and
English language. He was as-
sisted at the interment in the
Shiner Catholic Cemetery by
Rev. Father John J. Hanacek.
Pallbearers were his nep-
hews, Eugene, Daniel, Joe Jr.,
Robert, Charlie J. and Jimmie
Patek.
Rosary was recited at the fu-
neral home Saturday at 8:00
p.m. by the KJT; Sunday at
7:00 p.m. by the Knights of Col-
umbus and at 7:30 p.m. by the
Parish.
Musicians from this area com-
prised the orchestra that es-
corted him to his final resting
place and played escort marches
at the funeral home, church and
Cemetery.
The last resounding notes of
“Nearer My God To Thee,”
made most impressive the
graveside service. As the band
departed, they rendered the
“Music, Music March.”
Mr. Patek was born at Shiner
March 22, 1902, son of John
and Veronika (Mauric) Patek.
He was married November 5,
1922 to Justina Drabek in the
Shiner Catholic Church. The
couple lived at Shiner for eight
years, then moved on a farm in
the Old Sweet Home Commu-
nity 32 years ago where they
continued to reside, the address
being Route 2, Yoakum.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Laddie Patek of Old Sweet
Home; three sons, Laddie Jr.
and Edward Patek of Victoria
and Johnny Patek of Yoakum;
four daughters, Mrs. Edward
(Agnes) Schlenker of Shiner,
Mrs. Mary M. Smith of Austin,
! Mrs. Wm. (Annie) Wagner of
Victoria and Miss Gussie M.
L Patek of Hallettsville; three
L brothers, Charles, Jerome and
[ Joe Patek Sr., all of Shiner.
Fourteen grandchildren also
. survive.
, His father, John Patek Sr.,
; preceded him in death June 6,
1953 and his mother died Sept-
ember 24, 1943. Two brothers
also preceded him in death,
John Jr. died March 8, 1943 and
Jim Patek died April 19, 1955.
Mr. Patek was a member of
the Sweet Home Catholic
Church and also held member-
ship in the KJT Lodge and
Shiner Knights of Columbus.
He received his education at St.
Ludmila’s Academy in Shiner
and began his career as a mem-
ber of the Patek Band when 14
years of age.
A large outpouring of rel-
atives and friends gathered to
pay their final respects and ac-
company the remains to their
last resting place.
Many beautiful flowers
breathed a fragrant message of
sympathy to the sorrowing lov-
ed ones. To all who knew and
loved him, and to his immediate
family and near relatives, we
extend sincerest sympathy.

Last Rites Friday
Frank V. Pavlicek, 67, died
Wednesday, March 6, 1963 at
4:30 a.m. at his residence at 107
Avenue D., Victoria.
Mr. Pavlicek, a retired clerk
for Southern Pacific Railroad,
was born October 4, 1895, in
Lavaca County to Vine and
Agnes (Broz) Pavlicek, both
deceased. He was a former re-
sident of Lavaca County, also
a former Yoakumite, but had
lived in Victoria for the past 31
years.
He was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church.
A memorial service was held
Thursday, March 7 at 8 p.m. at
the McCabe-Carruth Funeral
Home Chapel. Funeral services

Dr. A. A. Darilek Jr. of Shi-
ner was named the new presi-
dent of the Guadalupe Valley
District Dental Society at a
meeting of the organization held
Saturday night, March 9 in the
D.R.T. Room of the Lexington
Motor Inn at Gonzales.
Dr. Eugene Lauraine of Gon-
zales, who presided over the
Saturday night gathering of
dentists, is the out-going presi-
dent.
Other new officers for the
year 1963-64 are Dr. Larry
Dornberg of Victoria, vice pres-
ident; and Dr. Nelson Kahler of
Luling, secretary-treasurer.
Dr. Kenneth Mueller of Vic-
toria is the president-elect for
the 1964-65 club year.
The program chairman for
the meeting, which is held every
two months, was Dr. Bryan
Denman.

Dies In Seymour
Mrs. J. J. Macha of Seymour,
former Louise Windel and for-
mer resident of Shiner, died in
a Seymour Hospital Sunday,
March 10.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, March 12, 1963 in Sey-
mour. Mrs. Macha would have
been 75 years of age on March
25. She is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. H. Arthur (Es-
telle) Zappe of Mineral Wells;
one granddaughter, Mrs. Alan
Davis (Joan Zappe) of Little
Rock, Arkansas and one great-
granddaughter. Mr. Macha died
I April 2, 1957.

7:30 p.m. by the Altar Society
and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. by the
Parish.

bert Kouba, Frank E. and Al-
vin J. Hons and Joe F. Jung-

ed as altar boys.
Mrs. Darilek passed away
after a brief illness at her home
in Shiner Friday, March 8 at
12:45 a.m.; at the age of 79
years, nine months and 11 days.
Nee Katherina Valenta,' she
was born May 27, 1883 in Ne-
tolice, Czechoslovakia, daugh-
ter of Thomas and Mary (Riha)
Valenta.
When she was 8 years of age
’ > she came with her family to this
country and first settled at
Flatonia. She was married No-
vember 21, 1905 to Albin F.
Darilek in St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church at Moulton by the late
Rev. Father Joseph Hudecek.
For many years the couple
farmed in the Shiner communi-
ty until 1947 when they retired
and moved to town.
Survivors include her devoted
husband, Albin F. Darilek of
Shiner; two sons, Herman T.
and Alfred F. Darilek of Hous-
ton; four daughters, Mrs. F. J.
. (Theresa) Jilek of Moulton,
Mrs. Joe F. (Rosie) Jungbauer,
r Mrs. Frank (Mary) Kouba, Mrs.
Frank A. (Adel) Hons, all of
Houston; four brothers,_Albert

Besides her parents, she was
preceded in death by two
daughters, Emily, who died at
the age of 10 years, and Kath-

John (Theresa) Jobb.
Mrs. Darilek was a devout
and faithful member of the
Catholic Church and also held
membership in the Altar So-
ciety and KJZT Lodge.
A devoted wife and mother,
a loving neighbor and friend
has been called to rest in the
heavenly mansion, leaving a
memory to be cherished by both
relatives and friends who sin-
cerely mourn her leave-taking.
We join friends throughout
this section in offering heart-
. < felt sympathy to the bereaved
family.
Mrs. E. E. Buenger
Of Hillje Passes
Away At 74
Mrs. E. E. Buenger, a resi-
dent of the Hillje community
for the past 31 years, passed
away at her home early Wed-
nesday morning, February 27,
1963 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Buenger was born in
Fayetteville August 5, 1888 and
was 74 years, six months and
22 days of age. On December
20 of last year Mr. and Mrs.
Buenger were married 53 years.
They were former residents of
Shiner.
Funeral services were held
Thursday afternoon, February
28 under the direction of Tris-
ka Funeral Home at the Trinity
Lutheran Church with Rev.
Edwin F. Lampe officiating.
Burial was in
Memories.

The latter three were her

Mrs. Buenger is survived by
her husband, Edmund; two

Emil Chalupa of Fayetteville,
John Chalupa of Ellinger and

Hubenak, Effie Hruska and Ol-
ga Zarr, all of Houston; and 13
grandchildren and 11 great-
grandchildren.

bina) Baros of Point Comfort;
and six grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in
death, the father having died
in 1922 and the mother in 1947.
He was also preceded in death
by two brothers and three sis-
ters, Eddie and John Pavlicek,
Mrs. Julia Buesing, Mrs. Carrie
Heinrich and Mrs. Herbert
(Lillie) Siems, who died No-
vember 12, 1961.

Linda Cimrhanzel, Carol Ull-
mann and Madeline Chaloupka.
Additional interest to the
Science Fair was provided by
the Spacecraft 6 vehicle, a
2,400-pound capsule, which
actually was in sub-orbital
flight. This Capsule is identical,
except for minor instrument al-
terations, in size and shape, to
the ones which Astronauts
Glenn, Carpenter, and Schirra
used.
The Students of the Acade-
my are to be commended for
their endeavors, the time spent
on their projects, and for the
ingenuity shown by the clever
displays in such a vast under-
taking.
The Faculty of St. Ludmila’s
express their appreciation and
gratitude to all who made the
Second Annual Science Fair an
outstanding * success. Special
acknowledgment goes to Doc-
tors Robert and John Dennis
Wagner of the Wagner Memo-
rial Hospital, O. A. Kosler,
Technician, the Staff member
