HOSPITAL—
(continued from front page)
* * * *
the hospital was small and its
needs scant, this arrangement
worked very well. But with
growth, expansion, and special-
ization, it became obvious that
an administrator and business
manager was needed; someone
to handle the actual business of
hospital operation; someone to
direct the personnel, to pur-
chase, to maintain inventories,
to complete insurance forms,
and to keep records, charts, and
registries. The position of ad-
ministrator was therefore de-
veloped, so that the hospital
could continue efficient opera-
tion, without thrusting non-
nursing duties upon the nursing
staff.
The nursing staff itself, thus
freed from the purely economic
and business side of hospital
operation, is able to devote more
time to its prime objective, that
of personal care of the patient.
In the many years of the hos-
pital’s existance, the hospital
reputation has been built upon
excellent nursing care, often
beyond the limits of what
might be considered maximum
attention. This was due to the
unselfish and dedicated attitude
of many of the nurses who
staffed the hospital in the years
past, and many who still staff
it today. To do this, the nurse
often sacrificed her own per-
sonal life and sometimes her
family life, to devote time and
talents to the patients under her
care. Her compensation fre-
quently did not meet her efforts;
the only satisfaction often was
her realization that her pro-
fession afforded her talents that
only she could share with her
fellow man, and that seeing the
lame body once again be healed
and leave the hospital, was a
silent tribute to her efforts.
The nurses’ hours as well as
her duties, are frequently re-
sponsible for detering young
women from entering this voca-
tion. Night duty, on-call, emer-
gencies, and interrupted days
off, are not easily acceptable to
anyone, the nurse being no ex-
ception. But love and devotion
to her nursing pledge overcome
many of these objections, and
somehow she manages to finish
her work. Being human, she is
gratified by simple apprecia-
tion, not only from her patient
or his family, but also from the
community as a whole, by their
acknowledgement of her sacrifi-
ces and the importance of some-
one doing a job.
The nurse is a trained per-
son; if she is a graduate nurse
she is required to have 4 years
of college education; if she is a

needed. During her training,
her compensation is only a tok-
en; while her contemporaries
often are able to start earning
salaries often without a fur-
ther education above high
school level.
The Dietary Staff and Main-
tenance Staff, also are trained
personnel; most of their train-
ing is of the practical or on-
the-job type of experience. The
cooks must have rudimentary
knowledges of a variety of diets,
that might be prescribed for in-
dividual cases. They have the
additional problem of not only
preparing food in volume, but
trying to make it appetizing
and palatable as well. The
Maintenance Staff attends to
the upkeep of the building,
equipment and grounds.
Mrs. John D. Wagner has vol-
unteered to continue serving the
hospital as a dietician; Mrs.
Wagner is a registered dietician
and contributes her services to
the hospital without charge.
With this article the current
series, devoted to the new Me-
morial Foundation Hospital in
Shiner, ends. The prime pur-
pose of these articles was to
give the general public a clear,
behind-the-scenes look into the
complex organization known as
the modern day hospital. The
Corporation felt that too often,
not enough information was
available to the citizenry con-
cerning hospital operation, and
that this would be one means
of correcting this situation.
Since the hospital is operated
through the Corporation for no
other benefit than to serve the
community, it is right and pro-
per that the people it serves
have a full understanding of a
hospital’s activities, problems,
and needs.
The Frank M. Wagner Me-
morial Foundation wishes to
thank the Shiner Gazette for
its kindness and space provided
to it, in publishing these ar-
ticles.
The Trust and Gifts Com-
mittee requests that any con-
tributions, gifts, or memorials
given in memory of a loved one,
be mailed or taken to the First
National Bank in Shiner. Ap-
propriate notification will be
sent by the Foundation to the
family concerned, and the don-
or will also be advised by mail.
