the body the death of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may
be manifested in our bodies. "
Suffering has stalked the Apost-
les. In the face of it, they do
not even raise the question of
why it has happened, but are
interested only in how they can
react to it by manifesting the
life of Christ. "Yes, we are
troubled, we are persecuted,
we are crushed, but our response
is not one of despair and defeat,
but one that manifests the char-
acter of Christ. In light of that
glorious reality, our afflictions
really do seem bearable, even
fleeting, and we can understand
suffering "as working for us a
far more exceeding and eternal
weight of glory!" (II Cor. 4, 17)
"Not until each loom is silent,
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Will God unroll the pattern
And explain the reason why
The dark threads are as needful
i In the Weaver's skilful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
For the pattern which He
planned. "

"How To Face Tragedy
That horrifying, human sob
of anguish and doubt - "Why?
Oh, God, why?" Here is a young
couple dazed and shocked. With-
out warning or explanation their
baby has just died. The question
rages within them - "Why ?Why ?
I must say in all honesty . I
don't know why. Who does? No
one of this earth, 1 think. The
question cannot be answered.
It is interesting, though, how
the different religions of the
world seek to resolve the dilem-
ma of suffering. The Hindu ans-
wers the "why" of suffering by
the simple explanation of Karma.
Karma is the unalterable law of
reincarnation in which the con-
ditions of your present existence
were legislated or determined
by the action^ of a previous ex-
istence. If your child dies, it
happens in payment of some sin
in a previous life. It is your
Karma.
The Moslem answers the "why"
of suffering by boldly declaring
"such is the will of Allah!" Why-
does tragedy seem to stalk my
family? Allah has willed it, and
what, Allah wills, we accept
without question.
The Christian faith is unique
in that it does not deal with the
question of "why", but raises
the question of "How. " How can
we respond to the tragedies that
haunt us. We cannot explain
them, but they happen, and when
they happen, the real issue is
what we do in the face of them.
The New Testament emphasis,
then, concerning suffering and
tragedy is not on explanation
but on reaction. Notice this pas-
sage from II Cor. 4. 8-10:
"We are afflicted (says Paul)
in every way, but not crushed:
perplexed, but not driven to
despair; persecuted, but not
forsaken; struck down, but not
destroyed; always carrying in
Germany,
