Health and Safety
Tips From The AMA
(home care of sick)
Someone sick in your house-
hold?
Most people who get sick are
cared for at home. Only a com-
parative few become ill enough
to require hospitalization. Al-
most everyone at some time is
required to care for a sick
friend or relative. Usually care
is required for only a day or
two, perhaps a week. Some-
times a chronic, long-term ill-
ness is involved.
Do you know how to care for
someone who is sick?
There are two primary points
to remember—Keep clean and
keep cheerful.
Sanitation is highly impor-
tant around the sick room. The
amateur nurse must remember
to wash his or her hands often.
Clothing should be laundered
frequently and thoroughly.
Used towels and cloths should
be handled carefully.
The sick person needs a
cheerful nurse to help the in-
valid keep up his morale while
getting well. A long, solemn
face won’t be very good for the
patient.
Equally important is a third
point—Don’t try to diagnose
and prescribe. The attendant
should obtain careful orders
from the doctor, especially with
regard to medications.
Sometimes cold packs re-
lieve discomfort, sometimes hot
packs are better. Let the doc-
tor decide. Write down his in-
structions for care and for giv-
ing medicines, to avoid error.
Rearrange your household so
that the patient has a room to
himself, if at all possible. The
room should be thoroughly
cleaned, and then kept clean
and neat.
Ask the doctor about the pa-
tent’s diet, and follow his di-
rections. Food served fresh and
hot, in an appetizing manner,
will stimulate the appetite.
Avoid laxatives and enemas ex-
cept on direction of the doctor.
There are home nursing
services in many communities
today. If you anticipate lengthy
care of a patient at home, a
nurse is available to come to
your home and demonstrate
proper methods for home care.
You can learn about their
availability through your doc-
tor or local health department.
Many communities also offer
courses in home nursing that
are very helpful.

Orphans Entertained
A very enjoyable event took
place Sunday when Miss Eliza-
beth Frers and her mother en-
tertained a group of youngs-
ters from St. Peter’s and St.
Joseph’s Orphanage, San An-
tonio at the Frers home. The
young folks, some of them
quite small, but full of vigor,
arrived at noon, accompanied
by Mother Raymond and Sister
Blandine. They were first treat-
ed to a bountiful meal and
then were entertained out doors
with games. They knew no
strangers and romped to their
hearts content. After a tour of
our town they left for home,
a tired but happy group. Ac-
companying them was Lillian
Kresta a sophomore student at
Blessed Sacrament Academy,
San Antonio.
