Conservation Help
Now Available For
Local Land Owners
By: Fred Allison, Jr.
Soil Conservation Service
If you are a land owner or
operator chances are you are
within the boundries of a Soil
and Water Conservation Dis-
trict. The McClellan Creek
Soil and Water Conservation
District serves Carson County.
Districts were created by state
law to form a basis for conser-
viving soil, water, plants and
wildlife. Each district has a
board of directors which are
made up of local land owners.
Soil conservation districts
have technical help available
from the Soil Conservation Ser-
vice, to assist you with conser-
vation on your place. Your
operations differ from anyone
else because your land, veg-
etation and operation needs
are different from those of other
people. Most land owners and
operators make plans for their
operations. It is equally im-
portant to plan for better use
of soil and other natural resourc-
es on your land. Such a plan is
a conservation plan. The tech-
nicans of the Soil Conservation
Service w'ill assist anyone with
conservation. They do not have
to be a farmer or rancher.
Planning is decision making.
Only you can make the final
decision, as to how to use and
treat your land. The SCS can
furnish you information on your
natural resources but you must
make the final decision. Once
you decide on a conservation
plan the SCS will assist you
carrying it out. The Soil Con-
servation Service has a cost
share program to help finance
your conservation plans. This
is the Great Plains Conservation
Program.
The Great Plains Program
was designed for people in the
plains states where climatic
factors are so hazardous. It re-
quires the land user to develope
his conservation plan for a per-
iod of years to make needed
changes in his operating unit
for good conservation practices.
The cost share rates are from
50 to 80 percent. Many oi the
Coope;ators or the McClellan
Creek Soil and Water conserva-
tion District are using this pro-
gram contact the Soil Conser-
vation Service office in. Pan-
handle.
