Coast Guard...
Cont’d from P-1
The emergency power system
provides for the operation of
everything except air condition-
ing, and ventilation fans can run
on the emergency system.
Though Coast Guardsmen
stay on duty in the station
during a storm, the group’s
boats are moved to the Turning
Basin in Corpus Christi.
Huffman said that an 83-foot
patrol boat was lost during
hurricane Carla in 1961 because
it wasn’t moved far enough
inland. The 83-footer was moved
into storm mooring at Ingleside,
but Carla battered it around
until it “actually sunk at the
dock.”
During the same storm, a
30-foot patrol boat was lost at
the Port O’Connor station
(within command of the Port
Aransas Group). The 30-footer
was inside a boat house, but
Carla collapsed the building on
top of the boat.
During hurricane Debra in
1959, the Freeport Coast Guard
Station lost both its boats. So
none of the station’s boats will
remain in Port Aransas though
they will all "stay under way to
face anything they have to."
Though the Port Aransas
Coast Guardsmen soon will
move into their new building,
they’ll be operating from the
same site where the service has
been located for almost 100
years.
In June of 1878, the forerunner
of the present Port Aransas
• station was established by an
act of Congress. For more than
30 years, the site was owned by
the State of Texas
Then in 1911, the United
States government purchased
the site for $750. The station
served as headquarters for the
old “Life Saving and Rescue
Service” until January 28, 1915
when President Wilson signed
into law the act creating the
U.S. Coast Guard as it is
presently organized.
The Coast Guard traces its
history back to the “Lighthouse
Service” initiated in 1789 and
the "Revenue Marine" founded
with 13 officers in 1790
Men stationed at Port
Aransas will find lots more
comfortable quarters in the new
facility which features adminis-
trative offices and living
quarters separated into two
pavilions covering an area of
20,500 square feet of floor space.
Overseeing construction of
the new station is Harrell
Hammons, a civilian employee
of the Coast Guard. Hammons
resides in a small town in
northern Louisiana while work-
ing out of the New Orleans
district office.
Hammons has been with
Coast Guard construction since
1959 and was with the Navy for
three years prior to that.
After spending more thhn a
year in Port Aransas, Ham-
mons soon will be leaving for
another assignment. His next
job will take him to Destin, on
Florida’s gulf coast about 30
miles from Fort Walton Beach,
where work has already begun
