MANNERS

DELL CITY--Manners when
you read about them, are a
bore — but when put into prac-
tice enough they are only sen-
sible, and soon will become
second nature. Instead of only
stiff words put into action.

Inspite of the fact that cus-
toms like throwing your cape
down across the puddle so that
your damsel might cross - are
passed, dating manners are
still a very alive and necessary
thing. For the men, or man in
your life, just a hint. It is still
nice to give the girls at least
a three day notice, as to your
next date. It is flattering to be
thought of in advance of the
big dance - and certainly a
painless way to "pick up points!1
For the girl, it is nice for the
young man to know that you
appreciate his considerate way-
- compliment him.
Some of the things to remem-
ber when out on a date --its
nice for the boy to help the
girl in and out of the car, help
her get her coat on and off,
ask her where she would like to
spend the evening or the after-
noon, and with whom would
she like to spend it -- aside
from her date, a double or a
group.
As for the young lady --it
behooves her to remember that
at all times - she is a lady. It
is much easier for boys to re-
member that you are a girl if
you dress like one. Pants and
slacks have their place, but not
often, and certainly not at the
movie, dance, party, or re-
staurant; picnics, riding, or
exploring, provide an excellent
, opportunity to wear levis or
"long pants. Another thing to
remember is a general appre-
ciative manner. Boys will be
more inclined to be gallant if
they know that you are aware
they are treating you with spe-
cial care.
See you next week.

For ever dependable annual,
select a sunny location away
from greedy "tree roots. Enrich-
ing the soil with a good well
rotted stable manure, or a pre-
pared sheep or cow manure are
all very good for the develop-
ment of sturdy, healthy plants.
Prepared cow manure and
sheep manure can be used at
the rate of 1 pound per 5 square
feet. Don't, however, just
sprinkle the manure on top.
Work it thoroughly into the soil.
And keep in mind when you
plant annuals not to "bury"
them. Some tiny seeds need
only to be pressed into the moist
soil. Follow directions closely
on seed packages. The soil
needs to be uniformly moist at
all times -- not soaked -- un-
til plants are growing vigorous-
ly.
It is always recommended to
thin plants once they are up
and growing. However, in Dell
Valley's arid climate, plants
seem to do well, and even bet-
ter if left a little on the crowd-
ed side. Seems this practice
helps to conserve moisture and
helps the plants to protect each
■ other from the drying winds and
dry climate. Naturally, some
large growing annuals require a
little more room than smaller
ones.
When transplanting annuals,
take up as much moist soil as
possible with plants. The object
and success of transplanting
depends on disturbing roots as
little as possible. Pinching the
growing tips of marigolds, pe-
tunias, snapdragons and zinnias
encourages bushier plants with
more blossoms.
