Lavaca County Farm
Bureau Roundup
(Mrs. G. J. Klekar)
It is just this time of the year
when many farm people are
making improvements around
their homes and barnyards, one
very important thing to remem-
ber is to be careful and work
for safety. “If you reach from
ladders when you paint — to-
day you are; tomorrow you
ain’t!” National Farm Safety
Week will be observed from
July 20 thru 26, 1958. We must
be cautious at our . work at all
times, not only the week in
July.
We learn that the Farm Bu-
reau has put out a Special Fam-
ily policy. Mr. Benson, our Ser-
vice Agent, says, “The South-
ern Farm Bureau Life Insur-
ance Company announces with
pride it’s new Special Family
Policy. This is a new way to
insure the life of each member
of the family in one policy. The
new babies are mutually fully
insured 15 days after birth, and
there is no increase in premium.
This plan provides for the
basic needs of any family, and
after the need for life insur-
ance protection has passed, the
cash value and accumulated
dividends provide money for
retirement.”
Fun galore! Miss Margaret
Sieber represented the Lavaca
County Farm Bureau in the
Yoakum Tom-Tom Parade June
12 and in the Bathing Revue on
June 13.
While on the subject of pa-
rade, the Lavaca County Farm
Bureau is having a number of
it’s members busy making a
float to enter in the Rodeo Pa-
rade in Hallettsville, June 20.
The board members decided to
have it as a permanent float to
be used in other parades in the
future.
Shiner reports having enter-
ed a float in the Hermann Son’s
Parade, May 25. Wonderful! It
is very encouraging to hear,how
our organization helps other
organizations.
The Bila Hora Community,
small as it is, has been formul-
ating plans on entering a float
in the Rodeo Parade. The peo-
ple at Bila Hora are a very en-
ergetic group, I must say. Keep
it up!
The Queen Contest is coming
closer and closer. Girls remem-
ber that the deadline for enter-
ing is June 21. All of you who
are eligible be sure to partici-
pate for this is going to be one
of the best contests that the
Lavaca County Farm Bureau
has ever held.
The office secretary, Mrs.
Lillye H. Jakubek is back at
the desk after a weeks vaca-
tion. She must have enjoyed it
for she is all smiles.
The committee on Cotton
Week has decided to have only
one “Cotton Style Show” thiss
year instead of the three that
were held the previous years.
The plans are not completed as
yet, so I shall let you in on
more in the next “Roundup.”
Everyone is cordially invited
to the Queen Contest June 28
at the Recreation Hall in Hall-
ettsville, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
You are promised an evening
of interest and enjoyment.

The Metropolitan Number System-will be
placed in effect here at 1:01 a.m. on Sunday,
July 6. That date will be C-Day (Change Day)
for all telephone numbers in Shiner.
The new numbering plan will introduce the
central office name “LY nwood” for this city.
A few telephone numbers may be changed
completely, but for almost all telephones here
there will be no change in the present numerals
of the telephone number. Only the new central
office prefix “LYnwood” will be added.
You will call a new way. But the change is
simple, and it paves the way for telephone
progress.
Jwf as easy... only different
Starting C-Day, you’ll dial the first two
letters of the central office name, then the
five numerals. For example, to call
LYnwood 4-3599, you dial L-Y-4-
3-5-9-9.
When you give a telephone number to
the operator, or repeat it to a friend, the
easy way to say it is to break it up like
this:
“LY nwood four... three-five...
nine-nine.”
This'is the best way to say it — to
understand it — to remember it.
HERE’S THE

New system means
telephone progress
The change on July 6 will provide a
telephone numbering plan for this city in
keeping with those already in effect in such
large cities as New York, Chicago, Hous-
ton, and others. It is part of a nationwide
plan to extend the operator long distance
dialing network, and the new numbering
scheme paves the way for the connection
of this city to the network. It also will
permit further telephone expansion here
with numbers that are easier to remember.
