The Peaeh Creek Philosopher Worried
Over Contaminating The Moon With
Radiation, Germs, Johnson Grass
The Peach Creek Philosopher
on. his Johnson grass farm on
Rt. 3, Shiner claims to be wor-
ried this week, but we doubt it.
Dear editar:
In all this excitement over
trying to get a
rocket to the
moon, most
people seem to
be concentrat-
ing on the sheer
fact of getting
one there, while
some of us <
deeper thinkers
have been concentrating on
other aspects of the matter.
There’s no point in rushing into
space or a farming year without;
doing some heavy thinking.
I read the other day where a
scientist is deeply concerned
about man’s contaminating the
moon with radiation and pos-
sibly disease germs, and he
wants the explorers to go easy
on this. Maybe circle the moon,
but don’t land.
I don’t know anything about
germs, except they’re the big-
gest friend a doctor has in ex-
plaining some forms of virus
sickness he can’t explain other-
wise, but germs aren’t the only
thing we ought to be worrying
i about when it comes to con-
taminating the moon or any of
the other planets.
Take Johnson grass. The last
I thing man wants to do, if he’s
planning on colonizing the
moon, is get Johnson grass
started up there, not to mention
all sorts of weeds, mosquitoes,
ants, chiggers, wasps, motor
scooters, etc.
Also, some scientists are wor-
ried about the effect the impact
of a rocket may have on the
moon if one hits it and one is
liable to if they keep shooting
in that direction. It’s sort of
like a woman who talks all the
time. Sooner or later she’s
bound to say something ac-
curate.
But it’s not the shock of a
rocket hitting the moon that
concerns me. As I see it, if we
reach it, sooner or later we’ll
land some people there, and
then later on somebody will

want to bring in a car, and if
we get as many as two up there,
they’re bound sooner or later
to hit head-on. If the moon
can’t stand sudden impacts, it’s
doomed.
In fact, come to think of it, if
we want to avoid contaminat-
ing the moon completely, we’d
better not land any people there
at all.
Yours faithfully,
J. A.

BALDWIN COLLEGE NEWS
The Student Club of Baldwin
Business College had the pleas-
ure of hearing C. W. Denmann,
Personnel Manager at Tex Tan,
Inc., at their regular meeting
held recently.
Using a flannel board, he gave
a most inspiring talk on the
“Twelve Ways to Excel” in the
business world. Emphasizing
each point, he gave real in-
stances in life bearing out each
essential. This exceedingly
worthwhile talk was especially
valuable to the students now en-
rolled in the Personality De-
velopment class.

ROTARY NEWS
October 13
At the conclusion of a deli-
cious meal the following visit-
ing Rotarians were recognized:
Warren Ellis of Three Rivers
and Otto Gaedke of Halletts-
ville. George Herder of San
Antonio was introduced as the
guest of Rotarian Don Kaspar.
Since this meeting was the
one customarily set aside for
discussion, the request of the
local school board for an in-
crease in local taxes was
brought up, and after a lengthy
debate the entire membership
was extended an invitation to
attend the meetings of the
school board.
October 20. — Following a
meal of steak and baked tur-
key with dressing, the Rotarian
visitors were recognized: Hall-
ettsville, Oliver Killough, Dan
Nicewander and Dan Kubena;
Ziggy Sears of Gonzales; and
George Glauberg of Weimar.
In view of the anticipated
visit of District Governor Floyd
Johnson of Waxahachie no pro-
gram was planned. Due to Gov-
ernor Johnsons’ inability to at-
tend today’s meeting the mem-
bership adjourned.
Miss Ella Zappe of La
Grange spent Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. H. G. Hollmann.

No more "keep off the carpet”
signs with this new tweed broad-
loom! The toughest stains clean
right out with everyday house-
hold cleaners, and the color won’t
come out with the stain — even
if you have to use bleach. That’s
because Baton is made of amaz-
ing Staylux carpet rayon with
color sealed in.
Baton’s rich town and country
tweed hides soil and footprints,
too. Its fashionable multicolors
provide a beautiful background
for any color scheme. And you’ll
love the smart new look the lus-
cious texture brings to every
room!
