After officiating in the American
League since 1901, Connolly will re-
tire as an arbiter after umpiring, at
, Boston June 17 and take over his new
— job -as- chief of staff of .umpires.
The job was recently created by the
new president of the league, William
r*, Harridge. Connolly’s duties will be
to supervise all matters pertaining to
umpires, and to scout for new talent
in the minor leagues. ■ - »
Born in Manchester, England, De-
cember 31, 1870, Connolly never play-
ed a game of baseball and did not see
one played until he was 15. Cricket
was.the only game he -knew until he
appointed himself bat boy for a team
that represented Natick, Mass., after

October, 1884. He later managed the
Natick team, but when asked to man-
age the Y. M. C. A. team of the same
A city, declined and said he believed he
would like to lie an umpire.
The late Tim Hurst, famed as a ma-
jor league umpire saw Connolly offi-
ciate a game in 1893 and .immediately
recommended him to the'N.ew Eng-
land League, where Tommy umpired
for four years. He went to the Na-
tional League in 1898 and remained
there until 1901, when he cast his for-,
•- tune with the young American
League. ’
He has officiated in eight world ser-
ies, and missed another because of ill-
ness. A keen student student of the
game, Connolly knows the rules from
A to Z. Few umpires have ever been
, held in greatest respect than Connol-
ly, and players never engaged in vio-
lent arguments with him. Connol-
ly’s ever-ready wit usually sent play-
ers who disputed his decisions back to
the bench smiling.
' Connolly ,it is said, knows mote
• jfiremen than any trian in America.- In
the old days when umpires kept them-
selves more aloof from players than
they have in recent years, Tommy
»» acquired the habit of visiting fire sta-
tions and fanning' with the boys. As
a result he’buijt up a tremendous ac-
quaintanceship among firemen who
swear by the Veteran umpire.
Until a few years ago he also refer-
red roller-polo games int Massachu-
• *etts, but gave it up to spend more
time with his family,, which consists
of wife tand eight children.

nearer 80 than the old figure of 548.
Furthermore, in all probability
there will not be a generalissimo, or
the Captain-General of the Army. The
vacancy caused by the death of Cap-
tain-'General Valeriano Weyler last
November was filled'shortly after-the
advent of the Republic with the ap-
pointment of Lieutenant-Gneral Fran-

Aguilera’s death in May it is again
vacant, and the chances are that it will
no longer be possible for an army of-
ficer to aspire any higher rank than
