In an exceptionally interesting ar-
ticle in Public Utilities Fortnightly,
A. G. Cederstrom presents seven po-
tent reasons why he wants to
treatment of public utilities:
First, he is an employe of
pany which has invested its
mainly in power and light securities.
If these companies are not allowed
to earn reasonable profits with which
to pay dividends, his job and those of
his fellow workers will be imperiled.
Second, .he is an owner of life
surance, bought as a protection

life insurance industry is in public-
utility snjurities. If his insurance
company receives no dividends or in-
terest on this investment, its income
will be reduced, necessitating an in-
crease in the net cost of its policies,
and' perhaps impairing their
value.
Third, he has at, account in a
ings bank — and savings banks
bought $650,000,000 worth of public
utility securities. Destruction of the
utility .industry would thus lower his
bank's assets, forcing a
the interest it, )>ays on
possibly even affecting
themselves.
Fourth, he has used

Fricke Seelhorst, big All-Star right-
hander, struck out eighteen Navasota
men), but the All-Stars lost the game
savings to buy public utility securi-
ties himself —the future of his in-
come is consequently tied up with the
future of the utility industry.
Fifth, he is a”*taxpayer. If units
of government build public utility
plants to compete with existing pri-
vate plants which alj^eatly adequately
serve the public, his tax money is be-
ing uneconpmically spent
Sixth, he uses utility service, and
wants that service to be good. If
utility companies are-not permitted Jo
earn an adequate profit they will have
no money with which to expand and
make improvements, and starflards of
service mitst inevitably deteriorate.
Seventh, he believes in fair play.
Government competition can never be
fair. When government* steps in,
using its advantages of tax freedom
and low-cost credit made possible by
its faxing- of all private property, pri-
vate concerns must step oiit.
These reasons require no elabora-
tion and they certainly provide high-
ly seasoned foot! for the mind. The
present campaign against the utility
industry amounts to a campaign
against thrift, savings, employment
and stored labor (investments) — and
in t(je long run it can do irreparable
barm to workers, taxpayers, users of
utility services — eyery citizen.
