Dan’l frowned sorrowfully.
"It was just their talk about Mr.
Brander and Faith, sir. Lies, as
I told you. They shut up when I
spoke to them.”
“What talk of Brander and my
wife?” Noll asked elowiy.-
Dan’l shook his head.
“You can guess it for yourself,
sir. The men have nothing better
to do than chatter and goosip like
old women. We need another
whale to shut their mdutha."
"What talk?" Noll repeated.
Dan’l smiled.
"I think too welf of Faith and
of Brander to say it for yeu," ho
insisted.
Noll fen silent, his browy tower-
werc entirely unwilling to predict when
their industries would improve.
But each of them uttered the same
ferve.nt ^xclameiion: “If only we can
pull through without having to cut
wages I”—-—.—.——— '
When ’you stop tp think about it,
-that is -an astoin..hing phenomenon.
Twenty-five years ago men in similar
positions would have said immediately:
"Business is off ten- per cent; . slash
wages twenty per cent".
'The same sort of executives who
used to assume that the way to cure
depression was by cutting wages, are
now convinced that the way to cure
it is not to cut.
That is one principal fact which
makes the current depression different
from its predecessors. That is pro-
gress!
History has a curious way of upset-
ring-eoMemporary judgments. .Many
of the events which seem important
tomen and wotnen while they areliy-
ing, prove insignificant in the eyes oT
the ages. And some very little things
later' loom large.
Who . was king of Spain in
do npt, remember. But I do
that in 1666 an apple fell and hit
Newton.
What was Warren' Harding?
were Oblvin Coolidge and Herbert
Hoover? Some future school-boy
may4 be puzzled by those inquiries.
But unless I am very much mistaken
every future history book will lay em-
phasis bn two developments which
have Jaken place under our very eyes.
They will tell that a boy named
Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic
~Ocean. -------------------------------- -
And that a man named Ford an-
nounced tfiat he would-pay all work-
ers, even scrubwomen, a minimum of
five dollars a day.
The idea that high wages makes
prosperity, that the key to good busi-
ness lies not in the .safe deposit boxes
of* .millionaires, but is carried in the
•pocket of every worker—this is some-
thing entirely -new.
It holds the hope of the future.
Whatever else may nave to be discard-
ed, American business must not
render that American idea!

beautiful parable God is the Father.
His house is the home where we all
belong. When we leave Him we go
away , from home. Sin is a foreign
thing. It belongs in the far country.
It is not our native element.
"Prone to sin as the sparks to fly
upward”, said Sterne. Quite true. It
means, however, that we are the vic-
tims of curiosity. We covet the thrill
.of estrange sights, new sensations.
That is the way it is depicted in the
masterly allegory at the beginning of
our Bible. The human pair heard
, that to eat of the forbidden fruit
would bring a novel experience. .They
wanted to see what it would be like.
They found out, to their bitter cost.
So did the young man of the parable.
The far country is a land of waste,
and want, and of sad disillusionment.
Those who wander there are soon
destitute and hunger-bitten. However
they may seek to hide it, they find
the far country of sin a land of hotne-
sick hearts; It is not tiieir own coun-
try. Its food is-, husks fit for swine
but.not for men. Its pleasures pall
for there is in them no enduring de-
light for children of God. We can
never be at home, or happy, or con-
tented in this strange land.
The pinch of conscience means that
sin is unnatural. So repententee means
a going back- home, back to God,
where we belong.
