Today Shilo is a frequent speak-
er; he shares his story around the
country with schools, special
groups, churches, organizations
and other wounded warriors. He
is committed to raise awareness

Shilo is a family man who is ded-

at the CHS reunion, I learned
that Garland did not build the
iron works, as I had previous-
ly thought. It was manufac-
tured by an iron works com-
pany, but Garland installed it
over the main gate.
The picture shown with this
article, while the building of
the wall was in progress,
shows the northeast corner
of Hufford Field. This picture
was taken by Joe Pouns,
who was the editor of the
Coleman Democrat-Voice
newspaper at that time. It is
stamp dated as having been
developed March 4, 1941.
be a soldier. On September 11th
his life changed forever and short-
ly afterward he enlisted as a
Cavalry Scout in the US Army. His
first deployment was to
Schweinfurt, Germany with the 1st
Infantry Division. From Germany
Shilo headed to war-torn Iraq.
On February 19,2007, during his
second deployment to Iraq, the
vehicle Army Staff Sgt. Shilo
Harris was traveling in was struck
by an improvised explosive device
(IED), killing three soldiers,
wounding the driver, and leaving
Staff Sgt. Harris with third degree
burns on 35% of his body. Due to
However the wall was not yet
complete, but the iron work is
already in place over the
main gate. So the rock wall
was not completed until after
March 4, 1941, but the iron
work was placed over the
gate before that time.
I keep learning more and
modifying my views of the
detailed history of Coleman
and passing it on. I hope you
enjoy reading and seeing
images and stories of
Coleman’s past. That’s all for
now. See you soon ... until

43.3 points per game. The
current Bluecat team has
scored 297 points, for a 42.4
game average. If only the
Post game had not been
called off at half-time due to
the weather, the 2014
Bluecat would probably have
the best season point aver-
age after seven games. But
as a mathematician rather
than a statistician, I would
use a 6.5 game average
rather than 7, which gives
Coleman a 45.7 game aver-
age this year. There is
always a way to twist statis-
tics!
But have you looked at what
the defense is doing. In the
first seven games, they have
allowed only 55 points to be
scored by their opponents.
That figures out to only 7.9
points per game! The 1946
team also had an outstand-
ing defense, as they allowed
their opponents to score only
13 points in the first seven
games. The 1972 Bluecats
allowed only 29 points in the
first seven games. We will
watch and see how the sta-
tistics play out for the 2014
Bluecat team in a few more
weeks.
A few weeks ago, I men-
tioned the iron work over the
main gate at Hufford Field
was being repaired and will
soon be back in place. I
learned something new
about this iron sign stating,
“HUFFORD FIELD - 1940,”
this past weekend. In visiting
with Pat Marshall Cantrell,

The Coleman High School
Multi-Class reunion was this
past Saturday in Coleman,
hosted by the Class of 1964,
as it was their 50th
Anniversary Reunion.
Everyone had a great time,
as far as I could tell. Next
year, it will be my classes’
turn to play host, as I will cel-
ebrated being out of high
school for 50 years! Next
year the reunion will include
the CHS classes of 1940
through 1970. The number
of classes being invited is
limited by the number of peo-
ple the Franklin Center will
hold, which is about 350.
Fewer and fewer of the class-
mates from the 1940’s can
attend, so even though we
will always invite these class-
es, not many are able to
attend.
I have to comment on the
2014 Coleman Bluecat
Football team again. They
are doing a great job, as the
team defeated Colorado City
this past Friday night, with a
score of 35 - 7, bringing their
season reason up to seven
wins with no losses. As I do
not believe in sports jinxes
and superstitions, this is
becoming a record year for
the Coleman High School
Bluecats. I want to talk about
some of the records they

have already accomplished.
Four teams have scored 14
points on their defense this
year, but no more. The other
teams scored 0, 6 and 7. At
this rate, they may have one
of the best defensive and
offensive team records in
CHS history.
Only two past CHS teams
have had 10-0 regular sea-
son records (1946 and
1972). The 1946 team was
the best team, so far, as they
were undefeated. They won
regional, which as far as a 1A
school could advance at the
time. Robert Russ was the
head coach and Foster Miller
was assistant coach. Two
coaches were all that were
needed at the time. Jack
Baucom was the head coach
in 1972 and Howard
Childress, Pete Simmons,
Grant Lee, Rickey White, and
Ronnie Watkins were the
assistant coaches.
The 1957 team had a 10-1
record, as they had one
game forfeited to them. They
were the co-district champi-
ons with Ranger, but Ranger
defeated Coleman, giving
them the right to advance to
bi-district.
The 2007 team holds the
highest points per game
average, scoring 303 points
after 7 games, averaging
