COLD WEATHER AND INSECTS - One benefit of
the record-setting cold wave that blanketed Texas in
late December may be a reduction in insect pests in
1984. Certain insects, such as boliweevHs, Mexican
fruitflies, greenbugs and some worms, should be fewer
in number this year, says an entomologist with the
Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M
Univ. System. Greenbugs on wheat were wiped out by
the cold weather although grain mites have increased.
The cold weather destroyed many insects that over-
winter in trash and plant debris but likely will not
affect those that burrow into the soil.
MEAT CONSUMPTION FACTORS - Advertising
has little effect on meat consumption The most im-
portant factors affecting meat consumption are
production and price, notes a livestock marketing
economist with the Texas Agri Extension Service,'
Texas A&M Univ. System Consumer income is also a
key factor. Other factors are occupation; urban vs.
rural dwellers; family size; face, religion and
nationality; away from home eating; season of the
year; institutional factors such as government food
assistance programs and food stamps; and the
prestige associated with meat consumption.
A t orient s teeth never stop
growing. They are worn
down by the animal's con
stant gnawing.
The Open House held by the Ramirez and Amanda
Burks Elementary Schools Jan 26 was considered a
success by the administration and staff. Parents
visited their children's teachers, examined samples of
work and received their child's report card. 313 cards
were handed out which represents 78 percent of all
students enrolled. The administration and teachers
were delighted by the large number of parents present
and greatly appreciate the excellent cooperation.
