NEW LOCATION
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Police
stormed a house before dawn today
and safely rescued two young chil-
dren, killing a murder suspect who
fell asleep during a three-day
hostage siege.
Four-year-old Malcolm Phillips
and his 2-year-old cousin, Tedi
Priest, were doing well. The boy
and girl were reunited with their
mothers, who cradled the young-
sters outside the house in a misty
rain. “The children are fine,” said
Lisa Schultz, spokeswoman for
Columbia Park Hospital, where the
two were taken afterward. “They’re
going to spend time with their par-
them. At 5:06 a.m. today, he was
surprised by police who had been
using electronic monitors to detect
activity inside the house, said Lt.
Cheryl DeGroff-Berry.
“We believe that he was sleeping
when the decision was made to
enter the building because the chief
was adamant that we would not go
in unless it was absolutely safe for
the children,” she said.
She did not know whether Arm-
strong was in the same room with
the hostages when officers raided
the house. Police also couldn’t
immediately say how many shots
were fired, how many officers
Iris Vickson, hugged her tight, and
Adrienne Phillips smiled broadly
as she held her son and patted his
cousin on the back. The children’s
fathers are brothers.
A SWAT team member suffered
a minor hand injury during the raid.
No details were released on the
officer’s injury or condition.
Armstrong, 39, was suspected of
fatally shooting a man and wound-
ing a woman in nearby Winter Park
before leading police on a chase
that ended near the children’s
home. He did not know the chil-
dren’s family and apparently picked
the house at random.

“It was very emotional for the

Kids were crying, mothers were
