For the spring 1998 semester,
class will meet from 5:30-6:45 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lee
College main campus in Baytown,
National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children, the Federal
Bureau of Investigation’s National
Crime Information Center and the
Child Abduction Serial Killer Unit
Excellent job opportunities in
the field, combined with top-
notch preparation at Lee College,
make health information a wise
career choice.
Health information profession-
als work in medical record
departments of hospitals and
clinics, where they organize, ana-
lyze and generate health data for
treatment, reimbursement, plan-
ning, quality assessment and
research.
These professionals also work
in ambulatory, long-term and
mental health care facilities,
industrial clinics, state and feder-
al health agencies, private indus-
try and colleges and universities.
People in the health informa-
tion field generally prefer indi-
rect patient contact to direct con-
tact; they handle patient records,
rather than urine or blood sam-
ples. They are good with details
and like working with computers.
A study completed during
1997 for the U.S. Labor Depart-
ment found median salaries for
entry-level accredited record
technicians (ARTs) between
$20,000 and $29,000, according
to A. Marice Ivey, lead instructor
for the Lee College health infor-
mation technology program.
“There are lots of job opportu-
nities,” Ivey says. “Former stu-
dents contact me to say doors are
opening that they never realized
would be available to them.”
Susan Burgess, ART, works as
director of medical records for
Texas Health Center-Baylor in
Pasadena. Terri Neal, ART,
works in Houston at the Texas
Medical Center as assistant to the
director at the Texas Institute of
Rehabilitation and Research.
Two other Lee College gradu-
ates work as directors at Texas
Woman’s Hospital in Houston.
Robin Brown, ART, CCS is
director of medical records.
Cathy Thibodeaux, ART, is
director of quality management.
Through practicums at work
sites, Lee College students expe-
rience the job environment and
develop skills while continuing
their classroom work. They also
make contacts that can lead to
employment after they complete
their two-year degree. Students
who enter the health information
technology program in the fall
can expect to enter their first
practicum area that summer.
“Harris County Hospital Dis-
trict, one of our practicum sites,
has hired a lot of our students,”

Ivey says. “We have a very high
placement rate of people from
our program.” L
Besides the excellent job
opportunities, students who train
at Lee College can expect quality
preparation for their health infor-
mation career.
After a site visit in 1997, the
Commission on Accreditation of
Allied Health Education Pro-
grams (CAAHEP) granted Lee
College continuing accreditation
of the college's health informa-
tion technology program.
Renewal of Lee College accredi-
tation is for eight years, which is
the maximum time allowed
between site visits,
Lee College is one of only
three colleges in the entire Gulf
Coast region whose health infor-
mation technology program is
accredited by CAAHEP.
“Students need to know they
may have problems transferring a
course,” Ivey says, “from a non-
accredited program to an institu-
tion with an accredited program.”
Accreditation standards are
established by the American
Health Information Management
Association.

nology at Lee College, call Ivey

Mont Belvieu Police Chief Jerry
D. Whitman will join 23 of his fel-
low chiefs from across the country
this weekend to propose model
policies for missing children inves-
tigations.
Whitman will take part in an
intensive two-day training session
in child abduction investigation as
part of the new Jimmy Ryce Law
Enforcement Training Center at the
National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children.
The center is named in memory
of Jimmy Ryce, a 9-year-old South
Florida boy who was abducted and
found murdered in 1995 and whose
case has inspired renewed concern
of addressing policies and strate-
gies in law enforcement’s response
to such cases.
These seminars will focus on the
most current research, practices
and response protocols, as well as
better educate law enforcement
administrators about resources
