Yeltsin says he won’t seek another term in office
> MOSCOW (AP)-- President
Boris Yeltsin said in a surprise
announcement today that he has
no plans to run again for office
when his current term expires in
2000.
The 66-year-old Yeltsin made
the comment during an address
at a Moscow school, where he
was marking the start of the new
school year.
He gave no indication of what
he intends to do after his term
expires. ___
“My term ends in 2000,1 will
not run anymore,” said Yeltsin in
remarks broadcast on Russian
television channels.
« Looking happy and smiling,
Yeltsin said younger, more ener-
getic people would be needed to
run the country in the future.
He also praised the young
advisers and officials in his
administration.
“We have a very good team - a
good, friendly and intelligent
team,” he said, in a possible indi-
cation that he hopes a successor
will come from within the
administration.
The presidential news service
confirmed Yeltsin’s remarks, but
said it had no further details or
comment.
The Russian constitution limits
the president to two terms.
But some of Yeltsin’s support-
ers reportedly had been looking
for ways to allow him to seek a
third four-year term.
There had been no indication
that Yeltsin wanted to find a way
around the constitutional ban
and seek a third term.
Yeltsin’s comments today are
likely to boost jockeying for the
2000 presidential election.
Among possible successors to
Yeltsin are Prime Minister Vik-
tor Chernomyrdin, Moscow
mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Com-
munist leader Gennady
Zyuganov.
Zyuganov was defeated by
Yeltsin in the second round of
the 1996 election^
Yeltsin, who underwent heart
surgery late last year, returned to
normal duties earlier this year,
saying his health was fine.
He has maintained a busy
schedule and has been pushing
the government to complete free
market reforms. •
Yeltsin has also been promi-
nent on the international scene in
recent months, traveling abroad
for summits and meetings with
other leaders.
Yeltsin told children today at
School Nuniber 1253 in Moscow
that one of them might grow up
to be president.
He was visiting the school to
mark the Day of Knowledge, the
traditional start of the new
school year in Russia.
“Boys, don’t be too hopeful
that you only will be president,”
Yeltsin told the pupils.
“Women can be president,
too,” he added.
In June 1991, Yeltsin won Rus-
sia’s first popular presidential
election by a landslide.
He won a second term in* 1996
by a strong margin despite a dra*
matic slump in his popularity
during the first term. d
His family reportedly opposed
any move for Yeltsin to seek a
third term because of his health
and age.
With a long history of heart
problems, the 1996 election
campaign took a heavy physical
toll, and by electibn day Yeltsin
could not even make it to his
scheduled polling station.
Doctors later said he had suf-
fered another mild heart attack
during the campaign.
