The rarest of the year
By Phillip Alder
For the final day of the year, let’s
look at one of the rarest deals ever.
Why is it so unusual?
Thi& layout occurred during the
Spring Nationals, held in Reno, Nev.,
last March.
When West rebid three diamonds,
perhaps North should have realized
that his partner was very weak and
settled for three hearts. With 4-3-3-3
distribution and six losers (two in
spades, one in hearts, two in dia-
monds and one in clubs), that hand is
not worth its face value of 22 points.
Still, at the table, it is difficult not to
hope partner has a useful goody or
two.
After winning trick one with dum-
my’s diamond ace, declarer called for
the club king. West won with the ace,
cashed his two diamond tricks, and
switched to the spade king. Declarer
ducked this trick, took the next with
dummy’s spade ace, ruffed the spade
jack in hand, took the trump finesse,
and cashed the heart ace. When the
king dropped, South claimed the re-
mainder for one down.
You’re right — West does better to
revert to diamonds after his spade
king holds. With East having the heart
nine, the defenders must score a
trump trick as well.
Back in the days of whist, the Earl
of Yarborough made good money bet-
ting his 1,000 pounds to the player’s
one pound that the player wouldn’t
pick up a Yarborough — a hand with
no card higher than a nine — on the
next deal. The true odds are 1,827 to
one against. And here are two
Yarboroughs in one deal! What are
the odds against that happening? Is it
about 182 million to one, or is my
arithmetic un-honor-able?
ASTROGRAPH
—
Afour
‘Birthday
Friday, Jan. 1,1999
A number of opportunities to better inform
you on subjects that are important to your
forward progress could be in the offing in
the year ahead. It’ll be up to you, howev-
er, to take advantage of them.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Stand
up for your ideas today if you believe
yourself to be right. Just because an
associate can speak louder or faster than
others doesn't make his or her concepts
better. Get a jump on life by understand-
ing the influences that'll govern you in the
year ahead. Send the required refund
form and for your Astro-Graph predictions
by mailing $2 to Astro-Graph, c/o this
newspaper, P.O. Box 1758, Murray Hill
Station, New York, NY 10156. Be sure to
state your zodiac sign.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Your
usual methodical manner in which you
’handle assignments or tasks could go by
the boards today. If yoiffind yourself in a
muddle, shelve these little jobs for anoth-
er day.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) Because of
your reluctance to exclude guests who
don't get along well with one another, any
social event you might be chairing today
might not come off too smoothly.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) If you are
hoping to finalize a matter of conse-
quence today, timing will be the primary
factor. Don't wait until the opportunity has
passed, but don’t close prematurely
either.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your sign
can be either totally open-minded or com-
pletely nonreceptive to the suggestions of
others. Unfortunately, you might choose
the latter today, even when osiers are
trying to help.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Under today’s
influences, you're going to need to be
watchful that you don’t become wasteful
and blow the very financial gains you’ve
achieved. Try to tuck some of it away.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Resourceful
measures can be taken today to circum-
vent any negative developments that
might occur. Just put your mind to doing
so. Think your way through or around
obstacles.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Rather than think
about the difficulties you may endure to
complete your tasks today, concentrate
on the rewards you can gamer from your
labors. It’ll pay off handsomely.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Of all the
people you may have difficulty pleasing,
a friend who is usually rather easygoing
might be your greatest challenge today.
Bite the bullet, hold your tongue and keep
your pal.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Just because
you may not be able to complete a pro-
ject you deemed to be of great signifi-
cance today, don’t abandon it altogether.
Catch your second wind and try again.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Un-
fortunately, those you encounter today
may feel equally as protective about their
ideas as you do about yours. Show the
same tolerance for their thinking as you
desire for yourself.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) If a
joint venture you get involved with today
is not in equal balance of give-and-takes,
it’s not likely to work. Make sure the
requirements are equitable before you
get committed.
