‘ Wall-toWail Walter’
A community’s
natural resources
are often numer-
ous and varied.
Baytown has
been blessed
with much, and
some of its greatest resources are
the people who live in this city.
When Ross S. Sterling High
School art teacher Cheryl Evans
went looking for an interesting
model to pose for her advanced art
students, she had to look no further
than local resident Walter Farrell.
Farrell donned his green felt hat
and came to pose for the advanced
placement art studio class.
The result is an exhibit entitled
‘Wall-to-Wall Walter” that will be
on display in the main office at
Sterling through Dec. 19. “Walter
is a student in my painting class at
Lee College, and I knew he would
make a good model for my stu-
dents to draw. I also wanted to
share him with my younger stu-
dents because he is such a remark-
able individual,” Evans said.
“Many high school students
don’t often have an opportunity to
be around many senior citizens or
to draw from their wealth of
knowledge and years of experi-
ence,” she continued. “I knew Wal-
ter would be a great role model. It
turned out to be a wonderful expe-
rience for everyone involved.”
The 71-year-old resident from
Barbers Hill has lived in the Bay-
town area since 1930, but his trav-
els have taken him all over the
world. As a Navy seaman and a
Merchant Marine, from China to
the Soviet Union, from Greenland
to South America, he has stories to
tell.
Farrell has worked as a pipefitter,
a roughneck in the oil field, and as
an inspector for Exxon. He has
always had an interest in art and
drawing, and recently decided to
enroll for course work in the art
department at Lee College.
“I’ve always drawn on napkins
and envelopes —just drawing the
things around me. My buddies that
I have coffee with always give me a
hard time about it,” Farrell said. “I
decided to sign up for an art class
to see what I could do.”
Farrell has been married for 50
years to Lois, his “Irish sweet-
heart.” Recently his entire family
showed up to see the artwork pro-
duced by the Sterling students.
Daughters Sharon Farrell,
Annette Farrell Hurst and Cathy
(Catfish) Farrell Cagle, son-in-law
Paul Cagle, grandson Josh Cagle
and wife Lois viewed the exhibit.
Everyone in his family has been
supportive of Farrell’s art and
stakes claims to the work that he
has done in class.

“My students gained so much
from this interaction—both as
artists and as individuals,” Evans
said. “I plan to continue to bring
human resources in to the class-
room.”

lar school hours Monday through
