MONT BELVIEU - The Barbers
Hill Lady Eagles struggled early before
clamping down on defense and eventu-
ally dominating the visiting C.E. King
Panthers, 68-45, Friday night.
“Our defense was very timid early
on,” Eagle Head Coach Pennee Hall
said. “But once we found a rhythm,
things straightened out.”
Trailing by a 16-14 maiginat the end
of the first quarter, the Eagles (11-2)
quickly turned the momentum to their
side by scoring 12 unanswered points to
start die second frame. It wasn’t until
the 2:31 mark of the period that the
Lady Panthers (6-5) managed to score a
single point on a free throw.
By the time the halftime break
arrived, Barbers Hill was in control at
34-22. They never dipped below a dou-
ble-digit lead for the remainder of the
night.
The first period was highlighted by
post Aarika Florus’ nine points on the
inside and a nifty layup and foul by
LeahAnne Donnelly that was converted
for a three-point play.
Keeping the game close for the Pan-
thers was forward Leigh Anne Cole-
man, who scored 10 first-quarter points
including two three-point baskets.
The second quarter streak that put the
Eagles out front for good was filled
with solid plays. Michelle Viverette got
things rolling with a 12-foot jumper
from left of the key. Jennifer Dover fol-
lowed by swishing home a three-point
basket, and Kristen Droddy stole a Pan-
ther ball and took it the length of the
court for a layup.
As the half wound down, Dover
shined again when she grabbed a free
throw miss and placed a perfect pass to
Florus for a layup. Dover then beat the
clock with another layup at the buzzer
off of a flawless pass inside from
sophomore shooting guard Charla Den-
mon.
The third quarter saw Florus drop in
seven before taking a breather. Donnel-
ly and Joanne Baker spelled Florus and
scored a pair each. Meanwhile, guard
Adrienne McGill controlled the ball
with ease and scored a basket herself
while driving the lane.
The final frame started with a driving
layup by Denmon, which she put in
underhanded. Rachel Herrington then,
scored four straight points to blow the
game wide open. A Viverette trey pro-
vided the stretch run’s brightest moment
and the crowd was sent home happy.
“A lot of positive things continue to
happen to bur program and that was the.
case again tonight,” Hall said.
“I keep telling Dover to be more
aggressive and she really showed me
something tonight by getting after it.
And it showed in her numbers (13
points arid six rebounds). She was’vb.y
productive.
“Aarika is always a factor. She scored
21 points despite having three people
on her all night.
“I thought Rachel Herrington had a
great game pushing the ball down the
floor. And our two point guards (McGill
and Droddy) both played well and took
care of the ball,” she said.

day in League City against Clear Creek,
