Most car owners buy a new bat-

$35 to $75 investment, often made

worst in batteries by slowing down
chemical reactions.

payback can be meager.
You shouldn’t buy a battery
more than 6 months old, the age at
which idle batteries start to deterio-
rate.
Figuring out a battery’s birthday
isn’t always easy, though.
Some batteries carry a factory
shipping date on a sticker, on the
wrapping or carton, or stamped
into their cases, but the date is in
code, obviously not intended to aid
consumers. . -
A common system uses a letter
for the month and a numeral for
the year: “A” for January, and so
on (“I” may be skipped); “7” for
1997.
But even if you can decipher a
date, it may not be reliable. We’ve
bought batteries that had shipping
dates of mid-1997 on the outer
wrapper, but were stamped with
dates from 1993 to 1995 on then-
cases.
To make battery shopping easier,
we’ve asked battery manufacturers
and their trade group, the Battery
Council International, to use dates
that reflect the day of manufacture,
not shipping.
These dates, moreover, should

gifts to my children and grand-

are all the same amount?
Can I give the money to
someone to whom I am not

How about the person receiv-

people, but there seems to be no
consensus.—R.C., Cincinnati
DEAR R.C.: You’re allowed
to give $10,000 to any one indi-
vidual in any given tax year as

DEAR R.R.: I don’t know of
any magic time to discontinue
your investment strategy. At
your age, you may have as many
as 25 to 30 years to go. Given
that, if it’s not broken, why fix
it?
If, on the other hand, you feel
uncomfortable having your
money so invested, then by all
means choose a more conserva-
tive approach.

large, unreasonable claims, and
in most of the cases, I was

Before you decide you need a
new battery, however, make sure
the terminals on your old battery
are clean and securely clamped. If
the battery takes water—that is, if
it’s not the sealed, maintenance-

And determine that your car has
no electrical problems Such as a
defective trunk-light switch which
can drain a battery.
Although batteries may look
nearly identical, there can be sub-
stantial differences among them—
and there’s plenty of arcane termi-
nology to know before you buy
one. Here’s a glossary to get you
started:
—Group size: Batteries with the
same number are the same size
and have terminals in the same
place.
Your car’s manual or the battery
dealer’s catalog should list the sug-
gested size for your car and possi-
ble substitute sizes.
—CCA: “Cold-cranking amps”

out lots of current at zero degrees
Fahrenheit. Taking winter into
account, industry standards specify
that a battery deliver its claimed
