RED BANK, N.J. (AP)—.The
family of a Long Branch police-
man shot to death in November
received a check for $ 112,500,
courtesy of Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce
Springsteen and friends.
The rock stars returned to their
native New Jersey on Saturday
night to perform at a sold-out bene-
fit concert. Some 1,400 fans paid
$] 25 per ticket.
The check for the family of Sgt.
Pat King was presented to his sis-
ter-in-law, Ann Bell, before the
show. She said King’s widow Mau-
reen and sons, Patrick, 12, and
Todd, 10, did not attend the concert
because it would have been too sad,
But the family got a sneak pre-
view of the concert during the
rehearsal. Bell said the boys were
“blown away. They thought it was
real special.”
Authorities said King was shot
twice in the back of the head at a
Chinese restaurant on Nov. 20 by
Deon Bailey, who stole King’s gun
and police cruiser and led police on
a 60-mile chase that ended near the
George Washington Bridge near
New York City. Bailey shot himself
to death.

Joaquin Phoenix says he’ll never ?
understand his brother’s death, but |
he’s close to accepting it. i
“What was difficult in the begin- |
ning was that I felt robbed of my
memories,” he said in the March ;;
issue of Movieline magazine. “See,;
a public death is a really difficult ;.
thing to go through.”
Journalists became memory - ;
hunters after River Phoenix col-
lapsed in front of a Los Angeles f
nightclub and died of a drug over-
dose in 1993.
“Anything that was mine, that I
knew, people would angle for, try
to ask me, they wanted to know
things,” said Joaquin, Who at 23 is
River’s younger brother.
His voice goes facile as he pre-
tends to be a smarmy Eastern
nalist, with jutting chin and teeth
clenched FDR style.
“From the inside, tell me a little
bit from the inside,” he mimicked.
Phoenix’s brother closer
to accepting death
But wasn’t die killed at the end LOS ANGELES (AP) —
of the original?
“No, I’ll be back,” she said,
despite her involvement in a gory
final scene. “PH be in pain, because
that thing hurt, I gotta tell ya. But I
shall scream again.”
