Matthew Perry checks in to kick habit
LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Matthew Perry voluntarily checked
into a treatment center to battle an
addiction to prescription pain
killers.
Lisa Kasteler, his publicist,
refused to say what medicine the
27-year-old “Friends” star was tak-
ing or why he was taking it. She
said only that he was in the “early
stages of chemical dependency.”
She also would not disclose
where Perry was being treated.
The Queen of Soul donated
$5,000 to the Salvation Army to
help it with losses from the
“Reunion — Weekend of Heroes.”

Camp Invention.
A beer ad used the likeness of
the ex-Dodgers pitcher, a recover-
ing alcoholic, without his permis-
sion, and he is entitled to a jury
trial to determine if his rights were
violated, his attorney said Tuesday.
A three-member panel of the 9th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
heard arguments in a request to
reinstate Newcombe’s lawsuit
against Coors, which a federal
judge dismissed in December
1994.
Newcombe’s suit stemmed from
an ad for George Killian’s Irish Red
beer that ran in Sports Illustrated’s
February 1994 swimsuit issue.
Newcombe, 71, a Cy Young
award winner, retired from an 11-
year baseball career in 1960
because of alcoholism. Since then,
he has become an advocate for
anti-alcohol programs for profes-
sional athletes.
