Plano teen calls himself a
'smart user’ after kicking habit
PLANO — When a friend
offered 18-year-old Marshall
Hampton some heroin, Hampton
said no, not wanting to deal with a
messy needle or run the risk of.
AIDS. He considered himself a
“smart user.”
When Hampton’s friend told him
the latest heroin from across the
border could be snorted like
cocaine, he couldn’t wait to try it.
Within two weeks he was spend-
ing $200 a day on the drug. To sup-
port his habit, he started pawning
electronics, breaking into houses
and stealing money froip friends.
Hampton’s hometown of Plano, a
prosperous suburb of 188,000 peo-
ple just north of Dallas, has seen 11
teen-agers die of heroin overdoses
in the past 1? months — all from
inhaling the drug, a practice young-
sters are convinced is safer than
using a needle.

Holiday Preparations
Preparations is a key factor in
surviving the holiday season.
Just as we need to prepare our
holiday feast, we need to prepare
our emotional self. Give your-
self permission to listen with
your heart to your own needs.

sad feelings. The only relief
from the hurt you feel from
grieving is to allow yourself to
grieve. Cry when you need’to
cry. Get angry and rage in a safe
place. Admit that you are hurt-
ing and feeling lonely. Talk
about your loved one and allow'
others to share their memories.
You will all feel better for having
openly expressed these intense
emotions. Grief verbalized is
