Harlem Elementary School, math teacher Joan Linares, left, con-
gratulates fourth-grader Michael Bartrip and second-grader
Ronde McManus on being the top fund-raisers in the school’s
annual Math-a-thon benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hos-
pital. Bartrip, who raised $197, was the first-place winner for the
second year in a row. Bartrip-generously donated the first prize
boom box back to -the school so that McManus could receive it.
McManus placed second in the competition raising $172.75.

Teen found in possession of drugs
A 14-year-old student was taken
into custody at Cedar Bayou Junior
School on Tuesday after school
officials found him in possession
of marijuana and called police.
Shoplifter caught
A 31 -year-old man tried to steal
two cans of chicken from a Garth
Road grocery store Tuesday but
was caught by employees and
handed over to police. The man
was charged with misdemeanor
theft, police said.
Youth trespasses at REL
Police took a 16-year-old into
custody Tuesday after he was
caught trespassing at Robert E. Lee
High School. The subject refused
to identify himself to a school
security guard, then swung at the’
guard who was trying to hold him
for police. When taken into cus-
tody .the youth was found to be in
possession of a small quantity of
marijuana, police said.
Track driver steals gas
Police said the driver of a trac-
tor/trailer rig pumped more than
$100 worth of fuel into his tank-
