Grand jury indicts man in Florida slaying
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A
man charged with murder conspir-
acy in the shooting death of a Flori-
da mother of quadruplets now has
been accused of hiring his cousin
to commit the crime.
Samuel Gonzales, 27, went to
court today in San Antonio for
what was expected to be a brief
extradition hearing that would send
him to Sarasota, Fla., to face trial.
But state District Judge Susan.
Reed announced from the bench
that a Bexar County grand jury
today indicted Gonzales on a capi-
tal murder solicitation charge. The
indictment alleges Gonzales hired
his cousin, Jose Luis Del Toro, on
state
Nov, 4 to travel to Florida to kill
Sheila Bellush.
Bellush, the 35-year-old mother
of six children including quadru-
plets, was found dead in her home
Nov, 7. Her four toddlers were
found crawling in her blood.
Gonzales’ lawyer, James McHa-
zlett, said his client was stunned by
the announcement of the latest
indictment.
“We didn’t have any idea/”
McHazlett said. “We’re just going
to step back and evaluate our posi-
tion now and prepare for war.”
In light of the new chaige, Gon-
zales has opted not to waive extra-
dition at this time, meaning he
won’t immediately be turned over
to Florida authorities.
Texas Rangers have been assist-
ing a Bexar County grand jury in
an investigation into Bellush’s slay-
ing, the San Antonio Express-
News reported today.
A Texas Ranger served a sub-
poena Tuesday to San Antonio
Express-News reporter Anita
McDivitt.
Sgt. Gary de los Santos of the
San Antonio office of the Texas
Rangers has contacted McDivitt on
two other occasions regarding the
Bellush case.
He asked the reporter about tele-
phone conversations between the
reporter and the victim’s former
husband, Allen Blackthome, that
took place before the slaying.
Texas Rangers had arrested Gon-
zales and Daniel Rocha, 29, on
Nov. 17 on chaiges of conspiracy to
commit first-degree murder out of
Florida. They have been held in the
Bexar County Jail.
Jose Luis Del Toro, 21, accused
of being the trigger man in the slay-
ing, is in a Mexico City jail
charged with first-degree murder in
a Sarasota warrant issued Nov. 10.
