pinch hit for him with the go-
ahead run in scoring position. It
turned out to be a good decision
when Dave Dellucci singled
home the tiebreaking run
Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over
the Houston Astros.
“That wasn’t one of the easiest
decisions because of the way
Randy was pitching,” Brenly
said. “But the last time I
checked, you have to score more
runs than the other team to win.”
Earlier in the game, Johnson
singled in a run.
“We made the decision that if
the winning run was on base, we
would pinch hit,” Brenly said.
“They had nobody up in the
bullpen, so we knew we’d have a
Jefty against a right-hander,
which is what we wanted.
“It was still tough to take
Randy out. But it was important
to show confidence in David, and
it was important to show confi-
dence in our bullpen.
“Randy tried to convince me
that he had gotten a hit the time
before,” Brenly said. “But I felt a
little better with David in there,
and it worked out well.”
With the score 2-all, Damian
Miller singled with one out, took
second on Steve Finley’s single and
scored on Dellucci’s two-out hit
“He’s the manager,” Johnson
said. “He makes the decisions.
When I was on deck, he told me
he might pinch hit if a man was
in scoring position. I said, ‘I just

the best at it”
Dellucci is 10-for-28 (.357) as
a pinch hitter this season with 10
RBIs. He felt the pressure
“I heard the whole thing,” he
said. “I went up there thinking
this is huge. I knew I had to make
(Brenly) happy. I didn’t want to
walk back to the dugout without
a hit after all that”

Berkman^lou,
Wagner named
to All-Star team
The Associated Press
HOUSTON — Houston out-
fielders Moises Alou and Lance
Berkman and closer Billy
Wagner were selected
Wednesday to the 2001 All-Star
team.
Wagner was surprised that he
was selected over 10-game win-
ner Wade Miller, who has 3.75
ERA and 97 strikeouts.
“I’m really shocked because
of the good year Wade Miller is
having, I thought he would go,”
said Wagner. “1 already had
made my plane reservations to
go back home to Virginia to
spend the break there. But I’m
really glad to be changing
them.”
Alou was rated first and
Berkman fourth in hitting in the
National League through the
first half of the season.
“I don’t know if I would hdve
picked (Wagner) over Miller or
Miller over him,” manager Larry
Dierker said. “It would have
been a tough call either way. I
think the thing was coming into
the season, everyone knew more
about Wagner.
“We didn’t really know what
we were going to have with
Miller. On the other hand, maybe
this will give Miller something
to set his sights on next year.”
Astros general manager Gerty
Hunsicker was happy to get
three players on the teain, bbt
wondered most about second
baseman Craig Biggio, who is
hitting .304. The Giants’ Jeff
Kent is the only second baseman
on the team.

Agassi, Rafter meet in semis again
Men’s top players to meet in Wimbledon’s
semifinals for the third straight year
By STEVEN WINE
The Associated Press
WIMBLEDON, England
— Like overnight queues, rain
delays and bad bounces, a
semifinal match between
Andre Agassi and Patrick
Rafter has become part of
Wimbledon tradition.
The longtime friendly rivals
notched solid victories in the
quarterfinals Wednesday to set
up their third annual show-
down at the All England Club.
And this time Pete Sampras
won’t be waiting for the win-
ner in the final.

ner-up Goran. Ivanisevic and

trying to become the first
Englishman since Fred Perry
in 1936 to win Wimbledon.
“That’s an incredible week-

Jennifer Capriati, seeking her
third consecutive Grand Slam
title, will be favored against
emerging Belgian star Justine

beating Thomas Enqvist 6-1,

a slow start to defeat Nicolas
Escude 6-7 (3), 6-3,6-4,6-2.
And Ivanisevic, 29, took
another big step in an improb-
able career comeback to rival
Capriati’s. He hit volleys
between his legs, blew kisses
to the sky and eliminated U.S.
Open champion Marat Safin

Emerging from an 18-
month slump that dropped his
ranking to 125th, Ivanisevic
became the first wild card —
male or female—to reach the
Wimbledon semifinals since
the system was introduced in
1977.
“Never happier in my life,”
said the mercurial Croat, the
runner-up in 1992, 1994 and
1998. “I’m playing the best
tennis ever I played at
Wimbledon.”
