speaks at graduation
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.
(AP) — Lawyer E Lee Bailey
has defended people in court
ranging from Patty Hearst to
O.J. Simpson, and.he admits
some of his clients weren’t
angels.
Without naming names, Bailey
told midyear graduates at Cen-
tral Michigan University that
defense lawyers often find them-
selves in ethical quandaries.
“I have defended a lot of peo-
ple in my life, and many were
bad people who trampled on the
rights of others or tried to take a
shortcut to. riches,” Bailey said
Saturday. j c.
“Sometimes in life, someone
may offer you an opportunity to
knowingly take a shortcut, per-
haps at the expense of others,”
he said. “Don’t do it. You will
neverbeahappypersonifyou

Bailey also received an hon-
orary degree at the ceremony

among 2,400 graduates.
New Jersey town
honors Boyz II Men
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Boyz
II Men is finding its rhythm on
the street — one of the city’s
busiest streets, to be exact.
Broadway was renamed Boyz
II Men Boulevard in honor of
the popular singing group on
Saturday. City organizers said
they wanted to honor the group
from nearby Philadelphia for
being good role models.
“It’s one of the greatest honors
that one can have,” singer
Shawn Stockman said after
unveiling the new street sign.
“This is a very, very special
thing to us.”
Stockman was joined at the
ceremony by fellow Boyz
Nathan Morris, Michael
McCary and Wanya Morris.
The boulevard’s name change
will be in effect for the next
year.

Giuliani as man of year
NEW YORK (AP) — Mayoral
tweaking turned to hero worship
at a New York magazine, which
went from lampooning Rudy
Giuliani to paming him its man
of the year.
“Who else presided over a city
in which crime is at its lowest ,
level in 30 years?” the magazine
said in a double issue that hits
newsstands on Monday.---~—
The magazine, which was
hauled into court a few Weeks
ago by Giuliani over ads plas-
tered on city buses that used his
name, continued to kid around
with the newly re-elected mayor.
“Who else, when pondering a
leap to a national stage, decided
to do so in drag? Who else might
have had this magazine pulled
from the newsstands had we
bestowed this honor on someone
else? Just kidding. Just kidding,”
the magazine said.
Giuliani complained about ads
for the magazine with the
phrase, “Possibly the only good
thing in New York Rudy hasn’t
taken credit for.”
A judicial panel ruled the ads

WASHINGTON (AP) —
“Titanic” director James
Cameron is trying to shrug off
the upcoming disaster epic’s
$200 million price tag.
• “What can I say?” Cameron
said in The Washington Post
Sunday. “It cost a lot.”
Nonchalant or not, Cameron is
realistic about the pressure the
film is under to be a true box
office blockbuster.
“There is every reason to be -
worried," Cameron said.
The three-hour-14-minute film
starring Leonardo DiCaprio
and Kate Winslet opens Friday.
Its length means fewer possible
daily screenings, complicating
its break-even earnings goal of
$400 million, a figure it must
reach because studios and movie
theaters split ticket sales.
Cameron — whose credits
include “Terminator,” “Aliens”
and “True Lies” — has no
apologies for mixing a love story
with disaster in his latest film,
which he pitched to studios as
“’Romeo and Juliet’ oh the
Titanic.”
j “All my movies are love sto-
ries.” Cameron said. .'
Guitarist, strike leader
arrested for obstruction
SANTA MONICA, Calif.
(AP) — Rage Against the
Machine guitarist Tom Morello
and other anti-sweatshop protest-
ers targeting clothing maker
Guess? were arrested forblock-
ing the entrance to a shopping
mall.
Thirty-three people were taken
into custody and given misde-
meanor citations Saturday after
leaving an approved demonstra-
tion site to block doors into the
Santa Monica Place mall.
The protest; attended by 200-
300 people, was over the apparel,
maker’s alleged use of sweatshop
labor and union-busting actions.
Last month, the National Labor
Relations Board issued a formal
complaint against Guess? Inc.
Help from Morello and Rage
Against the Machine led to the
demonstration’s success, said
,, Hillary Horn, spokeswoman for
the Union of Needletrades,
Industrial and Textile Employ-
ees, which organized the protest.
