Town won’t appeal
snowplow ruling
-’BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) —
Passion for the right to plow
srfow has cooled off.
Jhe town, which had provided
free municipal snowplowing for
parking lots of churches and a
synagogue for at least 50 years,
has decided it does not have
enough money to extend a legal
challenge for the right to plow.
“It’s disappointing that we
couldn’t muster up the
resources,” said Peter Costa, a
former councilman.
„ “I’m not sure the town has the
appetite,” Costa said.
.’The town will not appeal the
decision of a federal judge, who
ruled last month that the prac-
tice violates the constitutional
separation of church and state.
A lawsuit on behalf of six resi-
dents had been brought by the
Rhode Island affiliate of the
American Civil Liberties Union.
The town does not have the
$60,000 estimated to be neces-
sary for an appeal, said Town
Council President John Rug-
gieri.
Town officials had voted to
establish a Barrington Legal
Defense Fund and to appeal the
judge’s decision if $60,000 had
been raised.
But in the past month, six con-
tributions came in totaling
$1,000.
Ruggieri proposed the legal
defense fund as a way to pursue
Barrington’s sovereignty.
“I feel that putting religion
aside, we are giving away some
of our legal rights to govern,”
Ruggieri said. “I’m concerned
we are losing some of our basic
rights.”
While the free snowplowing
stirred emotions, there is no
resentment.
“I congratulated one of the
plaintiffs,” Ruggieri said. “I hold
no animosity to any of those
people. A court decided and
that’s the way it should be in this
country.”
History of Auschwitz begins
with just an ordinary place
‘‘Auschwitz: 1270
to the Present”
„A 19th-century German histori-
an wrote that history should
record events as they actually
happened. After Nazi Germany’s
systematic slaughter of 6 million
Jews, history also must ask,
“How were these events possi-
ble?”
Deborah Dwork and Robert Jan
van Pelt attempt an answer in
“Auschwitz: 1270 to the Present”
(Norton, $30). Concentrating on
die Nazis’ obsession with Eastern
Europe, the authors give a histori-
cal perspective to the events that
began with mass deportations and
led to mass murders.
Now largely known as the
biggest and most infamous exter-
mination center of the Holocaust,
Auschwitz has a legacy dating
back to the 13th century, when it
was settled by German farmers.
From this humble beginning, the
authors chart the evolution of
Auschwitz up to World War II,
when it became an integral part
of the Nazis’ vision of a utopian
German East.
The book then concentrates on
the men who designed and built
the Auschwitz of the Nazis —
first as a place for terrorizing a
subjected people, then as a labor
camp to assist the German war
effort, and ultimately as a death
damp.
By placing this Auschwitz
within its larger historical con-
text, the authors attempt to
remove it from the “realm of
myth.” Auschwitz began as an
ordinary place, they argue, and
became, step by deliberate step, a
hellish one. It was built not by
monsters, but by ordinary men —
architects, engineers and accoun-
tants who “inched their way to
iniquity.”
Written by two Holocaust
scholars, “Auschwitz: 1270 to the
Present” is an accessible and
well-researched work. The prose,
despite an occasional clunky
phrase like “Versailles-engen-
dered irredentism,” flows
smoothly. More than 225 photos
and architectural drawings give
the reader a visual sense of the
Nazi plans for Auschwitz, includ-
ing some that were never real-
ized.
More than 50 years after the
Holocaust, when the term “ethnic
cleansing” still makes news, we
still don’t know why Auschwitz
happened. But this book takes us
a step closer.
In decorating books,
what’s old is what’s in
; It seems as though there’s a dec-
prating book for every situation,
fantasy or whim — from one
room to a palace. If you received
or gave one of these colorful vol-
umes as a holiday present, you
might wonder how it measures up.
; “In many ways, decorating
books are more enjoyable than
they used to be — better orga-
nized and more informative,” says
Paula Baxter, curator of the New
York Public Library’s art and
architecture collection. “Instead of
drawings or black-and-white pho-
tos, as in earlier books, they are
likely to be filled with lush color
photography.”
- Yet current decorating books
have a lot in common with their
predecessors, as Baxter discovered
tyhile organizing “Artful Interiors:
Rooms With a View,” an exhibi-
tion on view through March 29 at
the library at 42nd Street and Fifth
Avenue.
• Baxter sifted through about
f ,000 old books looking for repre-
sentative examples of each era,
from 1750 to 1950. “What is real-
ly intriguing is that 10 words
describing interiors have been
popping up over and over,” she
says. Those words are: antiquity,
grandeur, opulence, elegance,
romanticism, fantasy, intimacy,
simplicity, comfort and modernity.
; The books of each era have their
own characteristics.
A typical “decorating” book of
the 18 th century was a collection
of drawings of magnificent
ancient buildings, such as “The
Antiquities of Athens” by James
Stuart and Nicolas Revett, pub-
lished in five volumes from 1762
to 1830. These books were
intended for wealthy amateurs
and the architects and designers
they employed.
By the late 19th century, advice
manuals for the masses were
widely available. One of the most
influential was Charles Eastlake’s
“Hints on Household Taste in
Furniture, Upholstery and Other
Details,” which went through
many editions in England, where
it originated, and in the United
States. The copy in the exhibit
was published in Boston in 1872.
Do-it-yourself is a feature of
the 20th century, and books such
as “Paint Brush Fun for Home
Decorating" (1949) and “The
Complete Book of Built-Ins”
(1950) are examples of the trend.
“There used to be more of a
tone of telling people what they
could and could not do,” Baxter
says. “Now, the tone is one of
informing people and allowing
them to make up their own
mind.”
The “Artfill Interiors” exhibit
shows off the library’s interior
design collection, among the
country Is best.
