2 SPECIAL REPORT

firfaSaxf MJ** Step,
Falling asleep seems the sim-
plest task in the world until
you can’t do it. But if you
suffer from insomnia, relax.
While long-term problems may
require professional help, many
others you can cure yourself. Ideas:
It’s your future.
Be THERE
1 Maximize your comfort Bed-
ding choices today are a spring-
board for debate — we all know
devotees of the eggshell pad,
futon, feather pillow, waterbed—
but a firm mattress and pillow
work best. Make sure your pillow
is not so high as to throw your
neck out of alignment Make your
room quiet dark and cool with
good air circulation, lb block out
traffic or other noise, try ear plugs
or soothing nature tapes.
2 Take a warm bath. Baths help
lower your body temperature,
which makes you feel sleepier.
3 Drink warm milk or herb tea.
Milk is rich in calcium and
L-tryptophan, which is thought to
help prepare you for sleep. The
ritual of drinking something warm
can relax you. Herb tea is a good
substitute for those avoiding dairy
products.
1 Do some light reading. Choose
a book you can put down eas-
ily —a humorous work, short sto-
ries, a favorite childhood tale. If
you do “required reading” during
the day, your nighttime reading can
become a special bedtime treat.
5 Savor your last hour before
bed. Save intense conversa-
tions for another time. Visualize
problems as balloons, then stick
pins in them. Avoid suspenseful
TV shows. In fact, avoid TV alto-
gether; the flickering light stimu-
lates your nervous system. E2
