Dear Editor:

As many Baatroptans know, my dad, Charley
Eskew, died on Friday, December 19,1997. And
it seems appropriate for me to say a few words
about those who live in our city and county.
Bastrop is my home. Like my dad sad gener-
ations before him. I was born here. I will proba-
bly always call Bastrop home. And like my dad,
I will probably live here until God calls me
home to Him. Bastrop has changed in a lot of
ways. When we natives go to Wal-Mart or HEB,
we can see in the many faces that Bastrop has
grown dramatically. Sometimes we say that
Bastrop just is not the same anymore.
But when my dad died, Bastrop responded to
our grief. From those who knew my dad and
mom, to those who know me and my brother,
the town (and many from throughout the
county), responded with their time, their devo-
Don ano tneir Hearts, it was not just me native
Bastropians who responded; it was the old and
the new Bastropians.
In the days of my childhood, a death or illness
in a family called out the best in neighbors and
friends. No matter how much we have grown as
a community, we have not lost that seme of
community that makes Bastrop special It seems
important to me to note that Bastropians are
loving, caring and conscientious people.
Whether they were born in Bastrop County or
just moved here, the people have not lost that
small town caring.
While little can take away the hurt caused by
the loss of a loved one, the sting is softened a lot
by the love shown us by all of Bastrop and Bas-
trop County. We are overwhelmed. And I think
that it is a tribute to all of our citizens that they
have such goodness and are willing to share iL
Bastrop is truly special, from the old to the
young, from the natives to the newly-arrived,
from every heart It means something to belong
to this community. It is encouraging that it has
not been forgotten.
We thank the people of Bastrop and Bastrop
County for being there for us.

Reader praises County
Judge for services
Dear Editor:
A number of people in Bastrop County are
announcing for election in the cainty offices.
Tins is the time to announce even though they
would not take office until 1999. This law is
outdated.
Before we focus only on the candidates, we
should remember our present office holders. For
example, our present County Judge Peggy Wsl-
icek, continues in office all of 1998.
We should be grateful that this skilled person
is willing to continue to work well for all of us.
