SAVING

SURPLUS!
CPL explores
many new fuel
resources.
To insure continued reliable electric service for you,
Central Power and Light Company is investigating a variety of new fuel re-
sources to supplement dwindling supplies of natural gas
In the near future, we’ll be adding coal and uranium to our supply of fuel re-
sources used to generate electricity. Our first coal-fired power plant will be
ready in 1980. Later that same year,
we ll have power from our share of
a nuclear unit, the South Texas
Project.
We know that a diversity of fuel
sources will be essential to guar-
antee that we always can provide
an adequate supply of electric
power for South Texas We are,
therefore, involved in many research
and development activities:
• CPL is continuing to support research efforts in nuclear fusion at The
University of Texas through the Texas Atomic Energy Research Founda
tion; and in development of geothermal resources along the Texas coast,
a three-year project with the university's Center for Energy Studies
CPL has entered into a partnership for a natural
gas exploration program, with 12 products
wells completed of 23 drilled so far.
At CPL's La Palma power station in San
Benito, a pilot plant will be established to
test the feasibility of gasifying high-sulfur
coal and fuel oils on a commercial basis.
CPL has placed in service its first elec-
tric generating plant designed to operate
for extended periods on fuel oil as well as
natural gas.
Virtually all of CPL's power plants are being
refitted to burn fuel oil to guarantee service
when natural gas is not available.
Central Power and Light Company
In outlining a few highlights of our current activities, we hope we have
brouoht you a better understanding of the effort we are making to be cer-
tain we can continue to provide you with dependable electric service, even
though the price will be higher.
