Bastropians have fun in the sun
Yolanda Gilbert became Mrs. Mike Sellers In a ceremony
performed by Justice of the Peace Katherine Hanna at the
Bastrop County courthouse gazebo July 3. Her children looked
on.
Mother-of-the groom, Brenda Sellers, looks on with a smile as
friends and family gathered for Yolanda Gilbert and Mike
Sellers* wedding at the gazebo July 3.
the groom’s side of the family,
were his grandmother, Dorothy
Kennedy (Brenda's mother),
Judy Rouse, Mike's aunt and
Brendg's sister, and Debbie
Bloom with her daughter,
Vicki, all from Kerrville.
Brenda's good pal Martha
Lambert Was among the merry-
makers, and Mike's drama
teacher at good old BHS Jerry
Wilhelm (the famed Jerry
Wilhelm who was the best
drama teacher there ever was)
was there as well as several of
Yolanda and Mike's Austin and
Bastrop friends. In case you
don't remember, Mike works for
Fox Services in Austin (A/C-
heating/plumbing business) and
Yolanda holds down the front
office at the Advertiser (along
'with Carolyn Wright and
Cindy Pavillard).
It was a lovely outdoor in-
formal wedding which everyone
seemed to enjoy. The weather
was perfect for that time of day
(this was before the unrelenting
heat and before a giant rain
storm which followed them to
McAllen). We wish the happy
couple the very best through the
years--and may they enjoy
health, happiness and financial
well-being! v

/ And speaking of marriages,
Sammy and Ruth Davis cer-
tainly tied the knot tightly when
they married July 23,59 years
ago. They will celebrate with
family and friends. They moved
to Bastrop in 1979. Ruth retired
from Phillips Petroleum and
Sammy retired from Shell Oil-
Deer Park Manufacturing Com-
plex. The family lived in
Pasadena, Texas for 37 years.
The family consists of three
children, eight grandchildren
and ten great-grandchildren, and
most of the family lives in
Texas, with the exception of ,a
grandson who lives in Oregon
and a granddaughter who lives
in North Carolina.
The Davis family believes
their move to Bastrop was a
great move. “We really love the
people of Bastrop, both in the
city and in the county,” Mr. ¥
Davis said. “We're proud to be

« William Higgins stopped by
•the Advertiser last week to visit
;and he was on his way to see his
igood pal David Lock. Earlier in
’.the day down at Lock Drugs,
'.owner John Mohrmann and
•ace assistant Elidia Alvarado
jsaid David had come in Thurs-
;day and worked for about an
ihour and was definitely in better
•spirits.
• They said that he's going
;back to the doctor and hopes to
' ifind out whether it will hurt or
help for him to put in some
•hours at Lock's. More rest may
be needed, but the good news is
that he's definitely on the mend.
“He's still moving slowly,”
Elidia said, “but he's feeling
better. You can tell that just by
looking at him.”
Mr. Higgins agreed. He goes
by twice a day to check on
David and see if any errands
need to be done (and to eat his
ice cream). Higgins, too, is
// ready for David to get back to
work so they can hang out to-
gether on David's lunch break
(feeding those cattle) and on
David’s day off.
Anyway, best wishes to our
former mayor and favorite
' druggist. See you up and around
soon, I hope.
And by the way, if you see
me with my cane, it's because I
leaned down to pick up a very
heavy water tractor which fol-
lows a hose around the yard.
The problem is, when it stops, v
you have to pick it up and move
it - or so I thought. My hus-
band, after I was bent over in
pain and agony, said, “Didn't
you know it has a little handle
that you can pull it by?”
Obviously I didn't know that
or i Wouldn't be lugging it
around! Anyway, no lifting for
me for awhile until those in-
flamed discs quit bulging out
and the pain goes away.
It really made me appreciate
David's ordeal even more -
though I know there’s nothing
quite like back pain to make
your life miserable.'
Onward.
Watch livestock
Speaking of ordeals, this
summer’s heat has quit being an
inconvenience and has become
down-right life-threatening to
many. And don't forget your
animals when it gets this hot,
because they need help, too.
Norbert Simon was in the
newspaper this week and he said
he had become concerned be-
cause he drove around the
county quite a bit and had seen
some animals looking poorly.
“It's not your rancher and his
animals you need to worry
about,” he said. “It's people who
want a pet. Then they get a
horse and don'tReally know
what a horse needs.”
He went on to say that he's
seen horses without water - and
as many people know, a horse
who has not water, won't eat any
hay, either. Animals must be
protected from this heat: dogs
shouldn't be left out on a chain
without any shade or water;
horses should be carefully shel-
tered, watered and fed; and of
course, cattle need that extra bit
of care, too. Let's hope everyone
takes this to heart and we don't
have any horrid animal abuse
stories in our family newspaper.
A fish story
L.C. Smith and Floyd
Bartsch were down in Port
Aransas last week and did they
go fishing! They went out on a
boat belonging to Don Temple
and caught a ton of fish-lit-
erally. L.C. said they worked so
hard pulling the fish out of the
water, they had to put down
their cold drinks! Now that’s se-
rious fishing. We wonder what
they're going to do with all
those fish?
Gazebo wedding
There was a festive wedding
recently at the gazebo on the
Bastrop Courthouse grounds.
The big date was Friday, July 3
and tying the knot were Mike
Sellers, son of Brenda and
William “Bill” Sellers, and
Yolanda Gilbert, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo Ochoa,
Jr. of McAllen. Justice of the
Peace Katherine Hanna con-
ducted the services and the
bride's children, Deborah, age,
18, and Yolanda's twins,
Catherine and Alan, stood by. I
hear Deborah even got a little
teary eyed. Deborah, by the
way, is going to Southwest
Texas State University this fall
and will be living in a dormitory
(she's so excited!). Catherine,
15, is in El Paso this summer,
staying with her uncle (and
Yolanda's brother), border pa-
trolman David Ochoa and his
family id Catherine's twin
brother, Alan, is also out in El
Paso enjoying the good life.
“Alan is living in the pool, that's
what he's doing,” his mother
said of the sophomore-to-be,
rolling her eyes.
Afterward, everyone went
back io Brenda and Bill Sellers'
home for a surprise reception,
complete with cake and punch.
The senior Sellers then pre-
sented the happy couple with a
huge basket of champagne and
cheeses, crackers, grapes and
other goodies which they took
to the coast with them.
Because, following the fes-
tivities, the newly-married cou-
ple went to McAllen to see
Yolanda's parent and drop the
children with their grandparents,
and then they went on to Padre
Island for a short honeymoon.
In attendance, mainly from
The two fishermen went out for six hours and caught a ton of
fish-literally. They ran into the fish about 25 miles out of Port
Aransas and hauled In red snapper, kingfish and black-tipped
shark. They kept some of the fish and gave the rest away and
all in all it was a wonderful day for the two Bastropians.
