Shooting Incident
Results In Charges
A 43-year-old Cotulla man has
been charged with unlawfully
carrying a weapon following a
shooting incident which occured on
Tilden St early Saturday morning
According to La Salle County
sheriff's deputy Rosendo Villarreal
limmy A. Nickell was released on a
personal recognizance bond after
the charge was filed.
Villarreal reported that deputy
Rene Benavidez and himself were in
the dispatchers area of the cour-
thouse at approximately 12:30 a m.
when they heard what appeared to
be gun shots As the deputies left the
courthouse to investigate, two
juveniles arrived at the courthouse
parking lot and reported that two
shots had been fired at them, one
shot striking the vehicle, entering on
the left rear side and exiting in the
far left corner of the windshield.
After talking to the youths, deputy
Villarreal went to Nickell's
residence and questioned him about
the incident
At that time Villarreal ac-
companied Nickell to the Sheriff's
Office.
As of Monday afternoon, deputy
Villarreal reports additional
charges have been filed by the
parents of the two juveniles.
Honors Banquet
Set February 26
The Woman's Club of Cotulla will
honor twelve students, the top three
in scholastic rank from each class of
Cotulla High School at their annual
Honors Banquet February 26th in
George Hopkins Cafeteria at 7 p.m.
Guest speaker will be Dr. Judith
Zaffarini, recently elected state
senator
Senior Honorees include: Ana Lisa
Zamora, who is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Alfredo Zamora of Cotulla:
Laura Leighton Storey, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Storey III also
of Cotulla and Melida De La Rosa,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isabel De
Lt Rosa of Cotulla
Janice Ehlert, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Wayne Ehlert: Brenda
Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ar-
thur Hill and Marcelo Perez, son of
Mr. and Mrs Reyes A. Perez are
Junior Honorees. All reside in
Cotulla
Sophomores who will be honored
are: Heather Ellisor, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Ellisor; Brian
Garcia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel
Garcia and Morgon Walker, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Walker. The
parents and students are residents
of Cotulla
Annyce Maltsberger, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Maltsberger of
Cotulla: Elma Nieto, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Margarito Nieto, Jr.,
of Encinal; and Kristen Michelle
Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Smith of Cotulla are the fresh-
men students to be honored.

They will be guests of the club and
seated at the head table.
Honorees are named in no par-
ticular order of rank. In addition,
members of the National Honor
Society of Cotulla High School will be
recognized for their scholastic
achievem ents.
The public is invited to attend.
Tickets are available for $5 per
person from any member of the
Woman's Club. Ticket chairmen are
Mrs. George Hopkins and Mrs. Gus
Hoff. Club president is Mrs Roy
Sturges.

The Cotulla Little Dribbler
Program started its season Monday,
February 9, 1987 with the girls teams
and on Wednesday and Friday with
Triple Headers with the boys teams.
Coaching for the girls teams
Connie Sierra for the Patherettes,
Carla Fowler and Caroline Saunders
for the Yellow Jackets, Cookie Vela
for the Longhorns and Carolyn Price
for the Cardinals. Coaches for the
boys teams are Joel Galvan for the
Celtics, Victor Longoria for the Jazz,
Rene Benavidez for the Lakers,
Shaggy Martinez for the Mavericka,
Juan Hinojosa for the Rockets and
Alex Vela for the Warriors. Score

Scouts Brave Cold
At Freeze-O-Ree
Only five Boy Scouts from Cotulla’s
Troop 150 weo> able to attend the annual
Tejas Valley District's Freeze-O-Ree
along with their Scoutmaster Lloyd Ste-
phenson. These five Scouts were Davie
Cole hado, Miguel Jimenez, Michael
Lovell, and Kevin and Paul Stephenson
Our Troop was awarded a Green Ribbon
for participating in the Freeze-O-Ree
and a Third Place Ribbon in the Foot-
ball Toss competition. Michael Lovell
earned a green Ribbon for his indivi-
dual efforts in the Obstacle Course event
For four of our Scouts, this was their
first time to be camping out in below free-
zing weather as part of a Scouting acti-
vity. This fact earned Kevin Stephenson
Michael Lovell, Miguel Jimenez and
David Colchado one of the more prized
special patches, especially here in South
Texas, the Polar Bear Patch.
At laM week's Troop meeting Jose
Bustoe finished up ms work on the re-
quirements for the Art Ment Badge
Michael Lovell also finished his re-
quirements for earning the Personal
Management Merit Badge Both of these
Scouts were presented their Ment
Badges at the close of the meeting

Students Have
Good Report
For St. Jude
Amanda Burks Elementary is proud to
announce that *3429 54 was raised by
78 students to benefit the St Jude Child-
ren's Research Hospital.
Each of these students secured spon-
sors to support their efforts in working
over 200 math problems. Their parents
assisted them at home with checking
their work for accuracy
Each student that participated will
receive a certificate A set amount was
not required. However, the 47 students
that collected over *25 00 will be given
a T-Shirt from the St. Jude's Children s
Research Hospital. The 13 students that
collected over *100.00 will also receive
a tote bag. These students are: 2nd
grade- Jamie Price. Brian Synatzske
Jace Ramirez. Shelly Leifeste Pamela
Garcia. Valene Maldonado 3rd grade
Amanda Lumm. D’Wayne Williams
Joel Montemayor; 4th Grade- Jimmy
Lee Gonzales. Flora Fiores, Dora L.

or 17 sponsors to help them get over the

Alamo Area Council's Awards Dinner
that was held in the San Antonio Conven-
tion Center As part of the program, the
Council celebrated its 75th Anniversary
as a member of the National Boy Scouts
of America. The Alamo Area Council
is the oldest Scouting Council in awarding
of the Silver Beaver Awards to out-
standing Scouting leaders.
The Silver Beaver is the highes award
that a Council can bestow to an individual
for his or her extraordinary work in Boy
Scouting.

At Show
The La Salle County Fair
Association will be a participant in
the Live Oak Country Days at the
San Antonio Livestock Show on Sat.
Feb. 21. All activities will take place
in the Family Entertainment
Center.
As in the years past, the Fair
Association has used this op-
portunity to promote the annual
Wild Hog Cook-Off to be held on
March 14. Last year over 3,000
people stopped by the booth to taste
samples of barbecued wild hog
Even more people are expected this
year to visit the exhibit.
Stop by and chat with some
hometown folks if you're at the Stock
Show on Saturday.

La Salle County Sheriff's deputies
two Cotulla youths, one 17 and the other
16, have been charged with criminal
trespassing after a Cotulla High School
teacher reported a 22 caliber pistol was
taken from his truck According to the
report of deputy Willie Sanchez, the tea-
cher had taken a group of <udents to
work at the Museum on Front St.
Sanchez reports that the truck was
left unlocked, and a witness reported
seeing two youths running behind

Two men were charged with disorderly
conduct Sunday, following an incident
which occured near the American Legion

cency with a child. According to Villarreal
the man has been released on bond
Reports indicate the incident involves a
16year-old female.
Junior Livestock Show
Will Be March 13
The Lb Salle County Jr. Livestock
Show in conjunction with the County
Fair on Friday, March 13 wdl be the
culmination of hard work and
determination for many of the
county s youth. These youngsters
who belong to 4-H and FFA have
worked for as long as eight months
on various animal projects.
The Jr. Livestock Show judging
begins al 6p m. on Friday March 13
at the Fair Association Show Barn.
Animals to be shown will include 7
fat steers 24 commercial calves 12
lambs. 17 pens of broilers and 20
hogs This represents a 40 percent
increase in animals exhibited
compared to the 1986 show
The animal exhibits are always a
highlight of the Fair. Browse
through the Show barn and give that
4-H or FFA youngster a pat on the
back for their continued interest in
agricultural projects
The Auction is scheduled for 1:30
p m. on Saturday, March 14 at the
Show barn. The youngsters of your
county deserve support for their
dilligent efforts Make plans to be at
the auction.

The organization of the Future
Homemakers of America at the
local, region, state and nationa1
levels has introduced STAR Events
which is a means for FHA-HERO
students enrolled in a Home
Economics course to compete
against other FHA students in the
categories of Chapter In Depth
Project, Chapter Display, Illustrated
Talks. Job Application and In-
terview. Kids Inc , Food Service.
Other vocational organizations such
as FFA, VOE, VICA and Industrial
Arts have been able to compete
against other students in their
respective organization for a
number of years The Texas State
Association of the Future
Homemakers of America has now
joined the ranks with competition
events. STAR stands for Students
Taking Action for Recognition.
The Chapter In Depth Project
and Chapter Display categories
allow students to create and design a
scrapebook or a six foot display that
reflects the program of work of the
Future Homemakers of America at
the local, region, state and national
levels. This event must be created
with pictures that tell a story about
the chapter s activities projects and
services
An Illustrated Talk is a presen
tation of a ten minute talk based on
any subject matter r'elating Home
Economics and its relationship to
FHA-HERO. Props must be used to
help the student relay his or her
message. The student also prepares
an outline of the speech and includes
reference sources.
Job Application and Interview
allows a student to practice in-
terviewing with prospective em-
ployers. The student must submit a
resume, interview with an em-
players. The sutdent must submit
resume, interview with an employer
for five minutes and must also write
a followup letter to the employer
within a specified time limit.
Food Service is specifically for
students enrolled in the Home
Economics Cooperative Education
program. It is designed to replicate
an authentic work environment
where persons work together to
produce a meal. Students par-
ticipating in this event will be ex-
pected to demonstrate versatility in
the preparation of foods, ability to
work in teams to create a lunch
within a time limit and with the
supply of foods on hand and process
knowledge of industrial food service
techniques

reports no injuries in a two vehicle colli-
sion Sunday at 11:00 am, m the 400
blk. of South Main St Sheriff Darwin
Avant identified the drivers as .Andree
G Luna. Cotulla, and Ramiro Delgado.

Luna was driving a 1982 Ford jackup
and Delgado was driving a 1986 Ford
EXP According to the accident report
Luna had slowed to a stop in the traffic
lane, waiting for northbound traffic to
clear, so he could turn left into a More
parking lot The Delgado vehicle collided
with the rear of the lune vehicle
Sheriff Avant said there was minor
damage to the rear bumper of the pickup
and considerable damage to the entire
front of the other vehicle

The State Comptroller s Office has sent
checks totaling *125.1 million in local
tax payments to the 1.038 cities that levy
the one percent local sales tax Comp-
troller Bob Bullock said that payments to
date were down five percent as compared
to payments made in the same period

Houston’s check for *20 million,
brought 1987 payments to *27 7 million,
down six jjercent from last year
