Bess H. Cook, 96, of
Smithville died Monday, July 6,
1998.
She was bom September 17,
1901 in Brandon, Texas to
William T. and Dora (Carroll)
Hammon. She was a retired el-
ementary school teacher from
the Smithville public school
system.
Survivors include a son,
William H. Cook Jr. of
Smithville; four grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.

9 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 1998 at
Marrs-Jones Funeral Hofne
Chapel with Rev. Judy Skaggs
and Rev. Y.J. Jimenez officiat-

William Chapin
William Chapin, 71, of Cedar
Creek died Monday, July 6,
1998.
He retired from the United
States Air Force, aftdr more
than 26 years of service to his
country, with the rank of Lieu-
tenant Colonel. He was a pilot
and served in World War II, Ko-
rea and Vietnam.
For his service, he was
awarded the distinguished Fly-
ing Cross, the Air Medal and
numerous other decorations.
Survivors include his wife,
Barbara Chapin of Cedar Creek;
a son, Charles Hosmer Chapin
III of Austin; a daughter, Wanda
Lunz of San Marcos; grandchil-
dren, Charles Hosmer Chapin
IV and Jonathan Chapin both of
Bastrop and Jane, Samuel and
Hannah Lunz of San Marcos;
and a great-grandson, Bryce

Bastrop died Thursday, July 2,
1998.
She was bom January 8,
1917 in Bastrop to Sam and
Esther Johnson.
She was a 1935 graduate
from Emile High School in
Bastrop and a 1939 graduate of
Huston-Tillotson with a Bache-
lor’s Degree in teaching. She
worked at Camp Swift in Bas-
trop from 1947 to 1951. Her
first teaching assignments were
at Royster School and
Clearview School. She taught in
the La Grange School District in
1951 to 1965 and in the Bryan
Independent School District
from 1965 to 1982. She was af-
filiated with the Texas State
Teachers Association, Retired
Teachers Association, Heroines
of Jericho, Volunteer with the
Bryan Police Department,
Community Upkeep Committee
James (Jamers) Clickner, 4,
of Bastrop.died Tuesday, July 7,
1998.
He was bom in Georgetown
to Richard Clickner and Dianne
Truchard.
and was a receptionist/attendant
for Daniel and Son Funeral
Home.
McNeil was a member of the
Paul Quinn AME Church since
1932. She became a member of
the choir, Stewardess Board,
Missionary Society and Class
#5. In 1965 she moved to Bryan
where she united with Allen
Chapel AME Church under the
Pastorage of Rev. S.L. Berry.
She was a member of the se-
nior choir, Stewardess Board
#1, class leader of class #10,
church secretary for many yeai?
and she also prepared the church
bulletin? for Sunday morning
service. In 1995 she moved to
Conroe with her daughter
Cladie and became a member of
the First Missionary Baptist
Church under watch care.
She is preceded in death by
her husband, Lawrence McNeil;
James is survived by his par-
ents. and one brother, Shaun
Paul Truchard.
Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. Friday, Jjuly 10,1998 at
Marrs-Jones-Newby Chapel.

officiating.
