Long explains why
he is a Republican
and defends platform
Sneary will give
this district real
representation
Dear Editor:
After two long years of having an empty suit
represent Bastrop in the US Congress, voters fi-
nally have a chance to send Ron Paul back to
Bayside.
Ron Paul’s only strength is personifying
hypocrisy. He appears in his TV ads with his
arms around elderly people, yet he wants to abol-
ish Medicare.
He says he represents rural Texans, yet he has
voted against every measure that would help fam-
ily farmers and ranchers in Texas, including fed-
eral relief for this summer’s record drought.
He is an Ob-Gyn, yet he has voted against ev-
ery bill that would improve health care in this
country, especially women’s health care.
He voted “no” on women’s health research and
prevention. He voted “no” on mammography
quality standards reauthorization. He voted “no”
on HMO reform and protecting patients’ rights.
He voted “no” on funding for breast cancer
research. He voted “no” on the Birth Defects
Prevention Act.
Dr. “No” does not have the prescription for
rural Texas. Vote for Loy Sneary for US Congress
and give this district some real representation.

Bastrop
Van Gilder has
given to community
and deserves vote
Dear Editor:
I wanted to take a moment to brag about
Derek Van Gilder! '
Van Gilder has represented me as my attor-
ney since 1994. His extensive education and
knowledgeable background are impressive.
I was very excited when he announced his
intention to run for county judge. He is so well
qualified, has a lot of experience in the legal
field, is mature and responsible and also con-
tributes to Bastrop as an employer and an advo-
cate.
Van Gilder has been and continues to be in
CASA and The Children’s Advocacy Center,
and this shows a true concern for out town's fu-
ture. After all, it takes a whole village to raise a
, child, and the more that each individual gets in-
volved with our childrens' futures, the brighter
they will be.
I believe Van Gilder will be a fair and honest
judge. Even though I am a Democrat, I support
Derek Van Gilder.

Bastrop
Eskew has experience,
talent and is a proven
fair and honest judge
Dear Editor:
I stand behind Benton Eskew! He is a very
fair and honest judge. I have been in front of him
for family court, and although he has not always
agreed with me 100 percent, he has always been
fair and honest.
He is a brilliant man and cares about Bastrop
and its families. He has experience and knowl-
edge, which his opponent lacks greatly.
Also, I have noticed that even with his oppo-
nent's grandstanding and mudslinging, Judge
Eskew has remained straight to the point. I have
no doubt his opponent has skeletons in her
closet, but Mr. Eskew has shown his Christian
background and solid beliefs by not resorting to
her tactics. What is important is experience and
knowledge, and 1 believe Judge Eskew surpasses
his opponent with flying colors!
My vote is for Judge Eskew!

with proven leadership by someone who pays
well as being a practicing business lawyer. Such
a background and experience can only benefit
wonkf have discovered were from his sisters. I
have motaeveral members of Derek's family
when they have come to Smithville over the
years. They are a dose family and it is no sur-
prise thathis family members are also support-
Having personally known Derek Van Gilder
for almost a dozen years, I can unequivocally
state that he has Bastrop County's interest at
heart and is not an “outsider as some people
attempt to paint him in letters to the editor. In
time personal friends. It is obvious that these are
contributions for which we do not have to
"beware.”
I know personally that for yean Derek has
contributed to the Smithville PFA and the
Smithville VFD. I have never seen Ronnie Mc-
Donald at any of these events, nor do I believe
Drusilla Rogers

requirements for a local office. It would be absurd
to restrict qualified people who want to "serve our
citizens from running for office because they
weren’t bom in the county. Few people would
ever qualify to be able to run for any office.-
Further; the letters to the editor insinuate that
Derek Van Gilder has no interest in Bastrop
County. This couldn't be farther from the truth.
Derek has actively committed to and been
involved with the community to a greater extent
in the last four years than Mr. McDonald has
since he was bom.
Derek is president of the Bastrop County
Rotary Club, on the board of directors (and treas-
urer) of the Clnldrefi’s A
ber of the “Friends of tty
on the board df directors
the Chamber of Commerce of Bastrop, currently
on the Visitors’ Bureau and a member of the
the site-based committee for Hill Street ,
Elementary School, a member of the Bastrop
Rodeo Committee and has contributed extensively
in many other ways to our county and his church.
In my opinion, all of these activities sound like an
individual who is committed to and involved in
his community and Bastrop County.
Finally, what some fail to point out are the
qualifications that Derek Van Gilder has to lead
the commissioners court into die 21st Century.
His extensive knowledge and experience as a pro-
fessional engineer, businessman and attorney for
over 24 years far exceeds the qualifications of his
opponent whose only work experience is as a
state employee for five years. The right vote for
our next county judge is Derek Van Gilder whom
I wholeheartedly support. I urge you to vote for
Derek Van Gilder for Bastrop County Judge on
Nov. 3.
In recent articles and letters to the editor, ques-
tions have been posed concerning the source of
contributions for Derek Van Gilder’s campaign for
Bastrop County Judge. Specifically, it has been
questioned why individuals from Houston,
Beaumont, Mississippi and Idaho would have an
interest in contributing to his campaign for elec-
tion. The taxpayers and voters deserve an answer
. to this question.
Derek has a large family and many friends who
contributed to his campaign for the single reason
of their friendship and family support. The contri-
butions from Mississippi and Idaho came from —•
two of his older sisters. His other Tamijy members
have also contributed as reported in previous fil-
ings. The contributions from Houston and
Beaumont all came from friends and colleagues '
that Derek has known or has worked with for over
15 vears.
None of these contributors have any hidden
agenda or secret motive for Bastrop County. Their
only interest is in their personal friendship or fam-
ily support of Derek Van Gilder.
Obviously, Derek will not be beholden to any
contributor or special interest when it comes to
conducting county business.
The characterization of Derek’s not being
“local” is totally inaccurate. Derek has owned
property in Bastrop for almost as long as his
opponent is old. That doesn’t come close to being
an outsider. Derek was bom in a U.S. Army fami-
ly that moved all over the country and overseas in
his father’s 29 years of service to our country.
Apparently, some believe that Derek should not
run for Bastrop County Judge because he wasn’t
bom here.
Our elections would be quite interesting if the
only way someone could run for office is to be
bom in the area for the office he or she seeks to
hold. I know our U.S.. Constitution has no such
Van Gilder no ‘outsider* but does
have support of family; pays taxes here
his fair share of taxes.
Yes, Derek Van Gilder has received contri-
butions from as fir away as Idaho and Missis-
this county for 20 to 25 years which is over half
of his lifetime. How can Derek be anything but
•local?”
His opponent, Ronnie McDonald, although a
very nice young man, appears from the Ap-
praisal District records to have never personally
paid property taxes in Bastrop County. Yet, this
is the same individual who some want to see
setting our tax rate and establishing our county
budget — someone who does not pay school or
other property taxes in the county.
I. for one, am voting for Derek Van Gilder
because of my personal knowledge of him and
Van Gilder has many local ties
qualifications for county judge

Dear Editor:
In 1980, it was pointed out to me as a
Christian minister that the platform of the
Republican Party was beginning to support my
concerns about private Christian education. In
the last 18 years I have seen the Republican
Platform become much stronger pro-life and
pro-family with mote individual freedoms, less
government controls and fewer taxes than the
Democratic Platform. *
The Republican platform has basically
returned to the Judeo-Christian beliefs and
standards of the Founding fathers who wrote the
constitution of the United States, (see paid
Republican County platform preamble and
article of separation of Church and State). As the
Republican County chairman, I had the local
candidates read the State Party Platform, agree
with its basic philosophy and sign toe Code of
Fair Campaign Practices from the Texas Ethics
Commission before I accepted their filing for
office.
You can view the Republican Party platform
at www.txgop.org and compare ft to the
Democrat platform at www.txdemocrats.org.
Local Republican candidate information is
linked to toe 18th Senatorial District website at
txgopdistrict 18.org.
Remember two things, the platform is toe
voice of grassroots America, and is started at the
precinct and county conventions. Second, foe
candidates who are elected will line-up with
ideology of their fellow party members after
they take office.
