American pet owners indicate they
are willing to provide their pets wid1
many of the benefits of modem
medical science, from medication
and routine surgery to daily insulin
treatment and root canal dentistry,
according to a recent Hill's Science
Diet survey.
But pet owners would only go 50
far. Most said they would not
authorize chemotherapy or kidney or
bone marrow transplants if their
pet’s health required it. They were
completely divided when asked if
they would provide their pets with
psychological treatment, if neces-
sary.
“Unlike 20 years ago, this survey
shows pet owners are willing to give
their pets first-class treatment and
afford their pets the modem day
medical benefits they would want for
themselves if they were sick,” says
Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins, pet
nutritionist for Hill’s Science Diet.
“I am particularly impressed
people are so aware of the pos-
sibilities that exist in dentistry for
dogs and cats. It is not surprising
people are wary of drastic cancer-re-
lated treatment," she notes, adding,
“As for the mixed response to be-
havioral treatment, many people still
think pet psychological therapy is
frivolous. They are much more sym-
pathetic to physical disease."

Dear Sue: My 13-year-old son
has become a problem in school.
He used tp be a straight A student,
but suddenly this year, his grades
have dropped considerably. The
teacher tells us he’s disruptive in
class, moody and rebellious. He’s
taken to running around with a
bad group of kids, also. No matter
what we do, he disobeys us and
won’t study or stop seeing his
friends. This summer, we are plan-
ning to go to a dude ranch for our
vacation. Since our son has always
loved horses and loves to ride, we
thought it might be a good idea to
leave him home to punish him for
acting up. Maybe this will give him
some time to think about the con-
sequences of his actions. What do
you think? Janie R.
Dear Janie: I think you need to get
to the root of your son’s behavior
problems. For instance, could this
bad crowd he hangs out with be using
drugs? You need to find this out and
address it immediately. This would
account for his behavior. If that’s not
the case, and he is reacting to becom-
ing a teenager, I think you need to
open up some sort of communication
with him. Discuss this with the
school’s guidance counselor. You
might decide that some family coun-
seling is in order.
As for leaving him home, I’m per-
sonally against it. Interacting with
the family is very important for him
at this time. A family vacation can
provide a relaxing atmosphere in
which he may open up to you. Take
him along.

HERE IS A PLEASANT LITTLE GAME that will give you a
message every day. It’s a numerical puzzle designed to spell
out your fortune. Count the letters in your first name. If the
number of letters is 6 or more, subtract 4. If the number is
less than 6, add 3. The result is your key number. Start at the
upper left-hand corner and check one of your key numbers,
left to right. Then read the message the letters under the
checked figures give you.____
