Head Start’s Sampson
learning on job, traveling
Bridget Sampson of
Smithville doesn't consider her-
self a jet-setter, but as a part of
her duties on the Head Start
Policy Council, she made a re-
cent trip to Washington.
“It was part of a national par-
ent training,” Sampson said.
We left Saturday before last
and came back the following
Tuesday. It's the first time I'd
ever been away like that.”
Life has changed for Samp-
son since her daughter, Tiyanna,
3, entered the Smithville Head
Start program.
“I signed a sheet at the first
meeting for parents,” Sampson
said, “and I ended up being
elected vice-president” of the
Smithville Head Start parent
committee.
Next, the president quit, so
Sampson moved into that slot.
And because the president of the
parent committee is automati-
cally a member of the Policy
Council, Sampson began at-
tending those meetings as well.
Pretty soon the out-of-town
travel began. She made a trip to
San Antonio, then to Washing-
ton. In April, shell go to Min-
nesota.
What does Bridget Sampson
Bridget Sampson
think of all of this? “I'm ex-
cited,” she says. “Real excited,
I've never had an opportunity
tike this before. It makes me
feel important.”
Sampson is handy to the
Smithville Header Start center
too, with a cafeteria job at
Brown Elementary. Her hus-
band, Burtis, works for the city
of Smithville.
“Head Start is something
else,” she says. “Tiyanna's not
the only one who's .learning a
lot.”
