Pepsi bid
rejected
by BISD
By John 8Mmk
Contributing Writer
Bastrop school trustees
Tuesday unanimously agreed to
uphold the district’s previous
contract with Coca-Cola that
gives Coca-Cola a 15 year exclu-
sive vending agreement on all
BISD’s campuses. The agree-
ment includes an extra $825,000
for a new Bastrop sports facility.
Hans Yeager, president of the
Bastrop County Concerned
Taxpayers Association, told the
trustees that the price increases
in the Coca-Cola contract will
cost students and staff more than
$1 million over the life of the
contract. “The opportunity costs
are too great to not consider
renegotiating the contract by
allowing competitive bidding,”
said Yeager.
“Although it appears that it
may not turn out to be the low
bid, we have the moral obliga-
tion to honor our contract with
Coca-Cola. At the time we
signed it, the contract was the
best deal for Bastrop schools and
we can’t go back on our word,”
said Trustee Roger Osborn.
Representatives from Pepsi-
Cola said their company was not
consulted prior to BISD’s
January 20 agreement with
Coca-Cola and promised
Bastrop trustees a better finan-

Irregular votes
in Democratic
An unsuccessful Democratic
candidate for county judge is
asking District Attorney Charles
Penick to look into alleged vot-
ing irregularities in the April 14
runoff election.
“I am very concerned about
the conduct of
elections
Bastrop County
and believe that
steps need to be
taken to prevent
illegal voting in
the future,” said
Deborah
Cartwright in a
letter to Penick
dated April 20.
Cartwright lost her bid to be
the Democratic nominee for
county judge in the April 14
runoff to Ronnie McDonald by
27 votes.
Cartwright charged that as
many as four voters may have
voted illegally in voting precinct
13 in Rastrop on April 14. A
more extensive revieW' could
reveal additional questionable
ballots, she said.
A change of four votes would
not change the election’s out-
come, Cartwright said.
Penick said Cartwright’s for-
mal election complaint had not
arrived at his office by noon
Ttiesday. The prosecutor spent
Tuesday afternoon in court help-
ing select a jury in the capital
murder trial of Rodney Reed.
But Penick said he will inves-
tigate, as state law requires, if the
complaint contains substantial
allegations.

New high school recommended for Smithville
By Jason Suchomol
Staff Writer
After months of consideration, a facilities
study committee for the Smithville
Independent School District made its recom-
mendation to school trustees - find a con-
struction site and build a new high school.
The group, headed by Mark Sheffield, had
been studying Smithville’s campuses as well
as those of surrounding districts that recently
added campuses.
The first priority outlined by the commit-
tee was to find a location for future construc-
tion.
“Future availability and inevitable price
increases lead us to recommend a quick pur-
chase once the appropriate site has been
found,” Sheffield told the board. z
The committee also suggested attributes
that the location should contain, including
room for growth and affordability.
“This does not necessarily mean cheap-
est,” said Sheffield. “The long life span, the
importance to Smithville's self image, and
the ... business development impact ... sug-
gest that cost should not be the deciding fac-

Enhanced law
enforcement one
idea on the table
A panel of local and state offi-
cials met last week to begin map-
ping out ways to make the sec-
tion of Texas 71 through Bastrop
less dangerous to drivers.
Enhanced traffic law enforce-
ment may be the key to improve-
ment, the group suggested.
The busy highway through
town has claimed two lives in the
first three months of 1998. Only
one victim died on the same
stretch in all of 1997.
