won first place In the San Saba District and second
place overall In competition with 21 other teams.

Fredericksburg won the contest which waa held at
Granite HIUs Hereford Ranch1 Saturday. The team
members are Scott Stafford, Lisa Kuykendall, Carol
Brandenberger and Heath Bradley.
Green Thumbers return from session
More than 120 Green Thumb
workers and host agency sponsors
from an 11-county area attended a
training session March 25 in Austin
where the latest innovations in
cataract surgery were highlighted by
Dr. Janet Lindsey, a Baylor-trained
opthamalogist. Explaining the dra-
hiatic improvements in cataract
therapy in the last five yeras, br. *•
Lindsey dispelled much of the
inappropriate anxieties of elderly
patients when confronting the need
for Cataract surgery. Depicting
through the use of a slide presenta-
tion the procedures in use toc^ay, she
demonstrated the ease and success
of contemporary treatment.

Alvena Lackey, Jimmie Gray, Ade-
laide Hallmark, - Marguerite Ray,
Raychel Conndway, Rachel Inman,
Virginia Pressler, Orbyon Black,

Grpen Thumbers were also trained
in cost-saving Medicare assignment
policies; methods of crime preven-

tion in rural areas; means of
attempting to deal with the loss of a
spouse and the wellspring of that
grief; and Routines for insuring
on-the-job safety. 1
Green Thumb, an older worker
program, is funded by the Depart-
ment of Labor through Title V of the
Older Americans Act. Sponsored by
Texas Farmers Unipn, Green Thumb
provides part-time' work opportuni-
ties for seniors in rural areas.
Program operation began in 1970
and currently includes 111 counties
employing over 1,000 older Texans
who are placed with local non profit
organizations to provide needed
community services.

from taking first place in a trophy-
less event. Fredericksburg FFA and
Gillespie County 4-H swept the main
titles.
“I am certainly phased that all of
you came tP participate in the
contest," said Llano County Agent
John Kuykendall. "I am a hit
embarrassed that the trophies that'
were ordered did not arrive here in
time. We will juat have to mail them
to you." r i.
Taking top honors in the FFA
division was Fredericksburg with the
overall total of 1997 points. Freder-
icksburg is part of the Hill Country
District where Mason placed second
wit!} 1945 points and Harper third
with 1924. >.
Llano placed second overall with
1975 points and was winner of the
San Saba District where Lohn was
second with 1904 and Priddy third
with 1897.
Third place overall went to East
Central with 1966 points followed by
Mason in fourth place with 1945. The

Mason team had inadvertently been
placed third until the board totals
were rechecked. '
Two clinics on techniques of
grafting and budding pecans will
be held on April 16. The first will
be held at 9 a.m. on the
courthouse lawn on the south side
of the courthouse in Llano. The\ l,
second will be held in the park by
the fire station in Tow at 2 p.m.
Dr. John Lipe, extension horti-
culturist, will help with the
programs. Inlay bark grafts and
patch buds will be demonstrated.
Graftwood will be available for
those who wish to graft trees at
home. The public is invited to
attend.
The Llano FFA team vfts made up
of |ieath Bradley who scored 643
points; Carol Brandenberger, 663;
Lisa Kuykendall, 669 and Scott
Stafford 629. Each team was allowed
four members and the three highest
scores made up the team total. ’
The winning Fredericksburg team
was made up of Dan Vostel, 681;
Kate Mitchell, 631; Bert Barwise,
647 and Rhonde Lochte, 669. Vostel
was named the "high individual"
while Lochte and Kuykendall tied for
second place. Lochte was awarded
second place by virtue of a better
cattle grading score. .
Llano had the highest team score
in sheep (568) and hogs (511) but
Fredericksburg scored 942 in the
cattle division to edge Llano for first
place.
In the 4-H division Llano placed
fourth With 1230 points behind
Gillespie County with 1251; Blanco,
1248 and Mason, 1239. Members of
the Llano team and their scores were
Jody Osbourn 388, Jeffery Osbourn
412, Brad Hatfield 408 and B J.
Hardin 410. Team members for
Gillespie County were Kimbefly
Wahrmund, 394, Misti Menzies 434,
Scott Sifford 417 and Brent Roeder
400. Again, otily the three highest
scores counted in'the total.
Menzies was named "high indivi-
dual” with her score of 434. There
was a three-way tie for second place
and the tie was broken with the one
getting the highest cattle score. Each
scored 424 points and Paul Pattorrof
Runnells County was awarded se-
cond place, Joe Pomykal of Bell
County third and Stephen Meier of
Blanco County fourth.
Runnells County was the best in
judging cattle with a 437 total;
Mason won the hog title with 275
points and Blanco the sheep title at
568. j
The contest was sponsored by the
Llano Chamber of Commerce and the
Hill Country Livestock Raiser Asso-
ciation. Dr. Doug Witt of College
Station set judging standards and
the event was hosted by Granite
Hills Hereford Ranch with ranch
manager James Grote welcoming
group of about 250 students and!^

Kuykendall places
on All-Star Cast
The Llano High School one-act
play, which earned a trip to the
area contest, at Cisco, received
commendation from the judges
but returned home empty-handed
except for the placing of Lisa
Kuykendall on the All-Star Cast.
The group performed “The
Patchwork Quilt.” Other mem-
bers of the cast were Bill Koch,
Jeri Sue Murchison, Natalie
Chamblee, Cheryl Myers and
Maurie Battle. Stage manager
was Barry Moore.
