First event
at Bastrop
Rodeo Arena
Several hundred people
showed up over the weekend to
the first event held in the new
Bastrop Arena 3-D barrel racing
event that was the third week of
a four week series.
Over $1,000 was split up
among the winners with Karen
Morris setting a new arena
record of 16.892 seconds to take
home the top prize. April 26
will decide the overall winner
for the custom made saddle
sponsored by the Bastrop Fam-
ily Rodeo Club. A Playday se-
ries at the arena starts April 25
for saddles and buckles. The se-
ries continuies each fourth
Saturday through October.
May 2 will feature 40 bulls
taking on 40 cowboys. Lester
Meyer and his crew will come
to town to kick off bull riding.
May 16 will feature the Bas-
trop Family Rodeo Club Open
Horse Show, a two-judge show
that will feature Western and
English riding as well as three
jumping classes.

March recycler named
The March Recycler of the
Month award went to The
Rodeo Inn in Bastrop. The
Rodeo Inn recycles close to two
tons of glass beer bottles and
cardboard cases each month at
the Bastrop County Recycling
Center.
Seventy five to 100 empty
cases are taken to the center
each week. This effort to elimi-
nate the glass and cardboard
from their waste stream is done
as an economic benefit to the
business.
Doug Ott, owner of the
Rodeo Inn said, “Our garbage
hauling has decreased from two
pick-ups a week to just once a
week allowing us to save about
$75 a month.” They have made
regular trips to the Recycling
Center for almost a year.

The Bastrop County Recy-
cling Center and Transfer Sta-
tion will be closed Friday, April
10 and Saturday, April 11 for
Easter. The center will re-open
on Monday, April 13 at regular
hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday
thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
Saturday.
Carey headed to Briar Cliff
Rodney Carey of Bastrop has
been accepted to Briar Cliff
College in Sioux City, Iowa for
the college term beginning in
the fan of 1998.
A 1998 graduate of Bastrop
High School, Carey's degree
plan at this time is economics.
He is the son of Rodney and
Irma Carey.

Deion Christophe, son of
Herman and Rosetta of Bastrop,
has been accepted to the United
States Military Academy West
Point Prep-school.
He will attend Prep-scool in
Fort Manmouth, New Jersey for
ten months and then graduate
into the Academy in New York
where he will go on to pursue
nis college education.
After four years in the
Academy he will join the U.S.
Army for six years.
High school senior wins scholarship
Catherine Felder from Bas-
trop High School has been
awarded a Carr Academic
Scholarship at Angelo State
University for 1998-99.
Approximately 300 Carr
Academic Scholarships for
1998-99, ranging in value from
$1,500 to $6,000 have been
awarded to qualified high
school seniors. During the cur-
rent year over 900 students from
throughout Texas and the na-
tion, as well as numerous for-
eign countries are attending An-
gelo State University on Carr
Academic Scholarships.
As a general rule, students
must rank in the top 15 percent
of their high school class and
present either a combined math
and verbal score of 1140 on the
