APRIL 14th
Bastrop I.S.D. students are
looking to finish the 1997-98
school year on a positive note.
One way that they are looking
to do this is by doing well on
the up-coming TAAS test Par-
ents should be looking for in-
formation from their child's
school to inform them when
TAAS testing will start.
Hill Street Elementary
On Friday, March 27, Katie
Sweany was the Principal for an
Hour. Katie received this honor
because she has earned over 200
ACE points. At 2 p.m., Princi-
pal Sweany was helping with
the Popcorn at the Principal
Party.
On March 11, the North
Wing could be seen swinging
lassos, racing ponies and
shooting at targets. Yes, it was
a real live rodeo.
One kindergarten class en-
joyed pizza and soda on March
27, celebrating the fact that
they had collected the most
money for the Pennies for Pa-
tients fund raiser benefiting the
Leukemia Society of America.
The class also announced that
they won a coke float party.
They won this party because
they collected the most box tops
in Hill Street’s General Mills
Box Tops for Education fund
raiser.
Hill Street Patriots collected
General Mills box tops during
January, February and March
and raised approximately $275.
Several Patriots participated
in the Austin Area Science Fair
March 12 and 13. The students
included:

Mina Elementary
Dr. John Wakh, BISD Su-
perintendent, visited with Mina
Elementary's third and fourth
grade students about the impor-
tance of self-reliance. The con-
cept of self-reliance was high-
lighted during March as part of
our character education
curriculum. Dr. Walch told the
students that it was their
responsibility to rely on
themselves and not depend
totally on others.
Dr. Wakh said he would re-
turn to see if the children had
done something without being
told, and also to check if any
parents or teachers had fainted
because of this action.
Students from Lisa Hese-
man's fourth grade class sub-
mined original poetry creations
to the Anthology of Poetry, Inc.
Each year this organization
publishes original student work.
The following students were
chosen to be published authors
in the 1998 edition of 77ie An-
thology of Poetry by Young
Americans: Pauline Gonzales,
Mary Ann Tenoco, Dani Rae
Nixon, Nickolas DeShay,
Daniel May, Malorie Young,
and Derwin Gipson.
