Dumas, Borger Teams Win Volleyball Tourney

First place winners in the Mens Division were: Bob Cooper
Buick of Borger. Dick Rice, Jerry Cooper, Dob Kenner,
Barry Stevens, Johnny Blankenship, Marvin Henderson
and Dave Immel.
The White Deer Young
Men held their annual
volleyball tournament
this past weekend. Reports;
were that it was a success.
Ten men's and ten women's
teams were entered in the
annual affair. There was
a total of over 120 people
who were playing.
Listed below are the
teams that entered:
Carlson & Cradduck, Pampa;
Stamps Klan, Panhandle;
Celanese, Pampa; Bob
Cooper Buick, Borger;
General Store, Spearman.
Teams from White Deer
were: Tommy May's Tur-
keys, White Cloud, Clint
& Sons, White Deer Young
Men and Cabot.
The ladies team included:
DeLoma, White Deer;
Market Baskets, Stinnett;
Con Chem Co., Pampa:
Cliff Hangers, Stj”iiett;
Nanewers, Amarillo;
Thriftway, Spearman;
K-Bob's Steak House, Dum-
as; Rattler's Den, Stinnett;
Tumbleweed Production,
Borger and Corrals, Stinnett.
The tournament was the
biggest and most exciting
ever held with most games
lasting over the existing
10 minute time limit.
First place in the mens
division went to Bob Coop-
er Buick; Second place to
General Store and Third
Place trophy to Carlson
and Cradduck.
Placing first in the ladies
division were K-Bobs Steak
House, second place went
to Chom Chem Co. and
Tumbleweed Production
was the third place winner.
The proceeds of the
tourney will be going to
the sponsoring of the
annual Easter Egg and
Scavenger Hunt for grades
pre-school thru 6 on April
15 at the Buck Football
Field..
The White Deer Young
Men would like to thank
the people of the community
and surrounding area
who helped to make this
tournament a big success.

School To Present
One-Act Play Friday
White Deer High
School's U. I. L. One-Act
Play Medea By Euripides,
and translated by Robinson
Jeffers will be presented
for the public Friday,
March 23, at 7:30 p. m.
in the high school audi-
torium.
This years play is a
Greek classic, which is
more dramatic than any-,
thing done by the speech
department in several
years.
The cast will present
the play for district com-
petition on March 27 at
about 6:30 p. m. at
Clarendon Jr. College
Auditorium. This will be
the first year to compete
in the new 2-A District.
All district schools will
be represented with Pan-
handle first at 2:30 p. m.
followed by Memphis
and Clarendon. After the
supper break Shamrock
will present their entry
followed by White Deer
and then Wellington.
The cast for this years
play is the largest in some
time. There are 12 cast
members, 3 crew mem-
bers and 3 understudies.
Cast members includes
Thercile Grange in the
title role of Medea. Shane
Grange portrays Medea's
ex-husband Jason. The
king Creon is portrayed
by Ralph Gallett. Aegeus
king of Athens is played
by Terry Barnes. Others
in the cast are Della
Satterwhite as the nurse
and Monty Carroll as the
tutor. The women of
Corinth are played by
Margaret Arellano, Kala
Haiduk and Brenda Barnes.
The children of Medea
and Jason are played by
Kristi Stevens and David
Abernethy, and the slave
is played by Jerold Mc-
Cown.
Crew members are
Dean Payne, Christi
Punches and Lisa Hodge.
Understudies are Dean
Payne, Tammy Barnes
and Lori Grange.
3-Year Old Injured
In Cycle Mishap
A three year old nephew
of Mrs. Larry Elledge
received serious head in-
juries Monday afternoon,
when a motorcycle fell on
him as he attempted to
climb on it in the back
yard of the Elledge home.
Local firemen responded
to the emergency call and
little Chris was taken by
Mrs. Elledge to Pampa for
treatment. He was trans-
ferred to Northwest Texas
Hospital by ambulance
where he underwent surgery.
His condition, Tuesday
morning, was reported as
serious but stable,' and he
remained in a semi-con-
scious condition.
YOUTH BAKE SALE
The First Baptist Youth
will be having a Bake Sale
Friday, March 23, 10:00
a.m. until gone at the
First Bank and Trust. Pro-
ceeds will go to the Youth
Fund for the Glorieta
Retreat Camp this summer.

For Byron Hodges
Held March 17
Services were held for
Byron W. Hodges, 82, of
Puckett Drive in Amarillo
at the First United Methodist
Church in White Deer
Saturday, March 17. Rev.
Oland Butler, pastor of
St. Paul's Methodist Church
in Pampa, officiated.
Burial was in the White
Deer Cemetery.
Mr. Hodges was born
March 21, 1896 in Mon-
tague County, Texas. He
and his wife Irene were
married in 1918 in White
Deer and moved to Amar-
illo eleven years ago
from the White Deer com-
munity. Hodges was a
retired farmer and a
Charter member of the
First United Methodist
Church of White Deer. He
was a 32nd degree Mason
in White Deer Lodge 1188
and a 50-year member of
Scottish Rites in Lubbock.
Survivors include his
wife; three daughters,
Helen of the home, Mrs.
Billye Whatley of Tucum-
cari, N. M. and Mrs.
Nadine Lee of Groom;
a sister, Mrs. Pearl Burgin
of Canyon; seven grand-
children and two great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bob
Major, Clarence Williams,
Gilbert Dickens, George
Eller, Charlie Fields,
Bob Pool and Lansin Osb-
orne.
Honorary Pallbearers
were White Deer Masonic
Lodge 1188.
Mrs. Ethel Bobbitt's
Services Held
Tuesday, Burial Here
Last rites for Mis. Ethel
L. Bobbitt, 89, were held
Tuesday, March 20 at
Smiths Chapel of the
Chimes in Panhandle. Rev.
Charles Ivey, pastor of
Pleasant Valley Baptist
Church in Amarillo, of-
ficiated. Burial was in
the White Deer Cemetery.
Mrs. Bobbitt, born in
Union, West Virginia,
March 15, 1890 was a long-
time resident of White
Deer before moving to
Panhandle. Her husband,
Clyde Bobbitt, preceded
her in death in 1966.
Survivors include a
daughter, Mrs. Ruth Earp
of Dallas; a son, Henry of
Amarillo; one grandson,
Tom Earp of Dallas and
two nephews of White
Deer, Jerry and Gene
Ballard.
Pallbearers were Sam
Osborne, Harvey Bates,
Homer Miller and Jerry
O'Neal.
The Board of Education,
White Deer Independent
School District, composed
of Morris Bra me, Darrel
Cathey, Gary L. Walker,
Owen M. Kramer, Roy P.
Thurmond, Mike Germany
and Carl A. Mynear, met
in special session on Mon-
day night, March 19th.
Vaccination Of Pets
Slated For April 21
Dr. Bfcn Hendrick,
Pampa Vet, will be at
the White Deer Fire Sta-
tion from 9 a.m. until
noon on Saturday, April
21 to vaccinate family
pets. Local pet owners
may take advantage of
this service provided by
the city at a cost of
$4.00 for rabies shots
and $2.00 for dog tags.
White Deer Firemen
To Host Fish Fry
The White Deer Volunteer
Fire Department will be
sponsoring their annual
Fish Fry for the community
Saturday, April 28 in the
banquet room of the Green
Punkin.
Tickets will be $5.00 for
adults and $3.00 for
children 12 years of age
and under.
Church Of Christ
Plans Gospel Meeting
Glenn Walton, minister
of the North Amarillo
congregation in Amarillo,
will be the guest speaker
of the Gospel Meeting to
be held April 1-6 at the
White Deer Church of
Christ. The meetings will
be held each evening,
Sunday thru Friday at
7:30 p. m. The public is
cordially invited to attend
Agri-Culture Days
To Be Noted Here
"Agri-Culture Days" will
be celebrated in Carson
County by the manage-
ment of Howell’s Inter-
national in Panhandle on
Friday, March 30 from
6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p. m.
Door prizes, pancakes and
sausage are among the
film-food-fun and special
events planned. Everyone
is invited. For more details
see advertisement on page
two of this edition.

for the meeting; approval
of the Textbook Committee
report to the Board for
ratification and certification;
approval of teacher con-
tracts for 1979-1980; and
interviewing of candidates
for the head football coach-
ing position were items
keeping the Board busy with
a long meeting.

Coach David Cottrell was
elected head football coach
at White Deer-Skellytown
High School. Coach Cot-
trell is a graduate of Cush-
ing, Oklahoma, High
School, and a graduate of
Central State College at
Edmund, Oklahoma. He
has coached in Amarillo
for the past nine years and
is currently varsity assistant
at Tascosa High School. A

weeks issue.
FRESHMAN BAKE SALE
The Freshman Class of
White Deer High School
will be having a Bake Sale,
with all kinds of goodies,
Saturday, April 7 starting
at 10:00 a.m. in the White
Deer Post Office and at
Dino's in Skellytown.
