But what I have been thinking about -so'much lately is the little court-
age we display for. the day at hand—being big for the day, the average day.
Some days, of course, are very easy to face; but when we w^)ce up in the
morning arid find it stormy outside,, and everyone'about us irritable, or at
' least not bubbling with delight and cheer, what a boost to life we give, if
for us there are no storms, no pessimists, no disturbers, of the peace!
We need so mdch to train «for our common days, to
tant and. outstanding, we need all the courage, patience,
sourcefulness we can muster.
Thjt-Yesterdays have passed along. We don’t have to worry about the

Nobody may ever hear of this secret heroism of oura^ but that will no{ mat-

from now, dependent upon this day—upon being big for this day,,

THE MOTHERLESS GIRL / *
Here is a letter to afir any woman's heart. It has the right ring to it,
showing; a father’s brave determination to do the best by his motherless’
children. Funds are low because the fathei* was ill a long time before
mother was taken. So he must earn the living and do-the mothering.
Mr. M. write* (in part): My oldeertfilTis twelve. Will you send me the
names of some books on sex-instruction for that age? Is it wrong to let
girls see or even help give a bath to their brothers who are five and seven
years .old? They do not seem to take special notice of the difference in sex.
I want to give my children a fair chance.
Answer: Children never see anything wrong in nature, until some dark
hint is dropped by an evil-minded companion. Fortunate is the youngster
who has had sisters and brothers, so that he takes the physical differences
in the sexes as a matter of course, just as he takes the differences in garb
Of man and woman, or the fact that father Shaves and mother doesn't need
to. Of course the children will make comparisons, and, ask questions of- each
other, but why shouldn’t they? The difference should never be a deep'dark
mystery.
On the other hand, the children must be safe-guarded against the ever-
present danger of turning the organs of sex into playthings, which they
might do innocently enough if not watched. As long as everything is done
in the open there is little danger. Night-time presents the real problem for
parental curbing of child tendencies. The boy and girl should not share the
same bed, and older children should not have little pals stay all night with
them. The very natural stirrings of sex tend to find easy opportunity under
cover of intimacy and darkness.
Now as to special instruction for the twelve-year old daughter. The
public libraries usually carry a few books that aim to give help in this prob-
lem, and the librarian is always ready to select the suitable book. When
you find one you like, it might be well t<j buy it, and leave it easily at hand
for the girl to pick up.
Practically never, however, does the book tell what the girl or boy or
youth really needs and wants to know. So why not put yourself in the
inquirer's place, and remember what you craved to know at his age? Then
in sweet humbleness of spirit, and without sentiment, explain the changing
chemistry in the body of the youth and maiden. Tell how the special or-
gans are being developed so that the girl when she becomes a woman may
grow a child of her own, and that the boy, grown to man’s estate, may have
hie share in making the new life. The facts are really simple after all. Tell
them in a straight-forward way, and both boy and girl will be ready to
follow the common-sense hygiene you are capable of giving. The spoken
word has more force than a book.
