Let’s keep Agriculture
America’s greatest success story
America's farmers represent this country's greatest
success story.
No other sector of the economy can match the contri-
butions of today's farmers. Each farmer provides food
and fiber for al least 57 people in America and around
the world. In the process, he makes it possible for the
average U.S. consumer to spend only 17% of his after-
tax income for nutritious food — among the lowest in
the world. His record of efficiency and productivity
stands unequalled. And he represents the major sector
ol the economy making a positive contribution to oui
balance of payments.
I odav s farmers have accomplished all this and more in
spite of the uncertainties of the market. Weather. And
excessive government regulations.
But inflation is making it tougher on today’s farmers,
narrowing their margins in spue ol improvements in
lai m income.
II larmers arc to continue making these contributions,
they must make a reasonable and fair return on their
investment.
All o\ er America, all of us must do a better job of telling
the story that this country needs a profitable and
productive agriculture, with ever-increasing leadership
m world trade.
VV c want America's farmers to remain America's
greatest success story.
